Steven Gerrard after Liverpool’s Champions League defeat told the Reds to sign a new midfielder.
He also stated that they should alleviate the goal-scoring burden from their strikers by signing a midfielder this season.
The Merseyside club put up a dominant display in the Champions League final against Real Madrid. They had 24 shots in total throughout the match but did not have any luck on goal.
A Man of the Match performance from Thibaut Curtois put Real Madrid ahead and inspired them to the title for the 14th time.
Real looked below par in the first half. However, they improved their chances in the second half and the goal came just within the hour mark from a Vinicius Jr. tap-in.
Liverpool could garner quite a few shots on goal. Moreover, two excellent shots from Mane and Salah were denied by a flawless Curtois.
The best chance of the night fell to Naby Keita who took a haywire volley to fire it over the bar.
Gerrard was in attendance for the UCL final. He felt that a lack of a goalscoring midfielder finally spoiled their chances for the night.
What did Steven Gerrard say about signing a new midfielder for Liverpool?
Gerrard spoke to BT Sport after the game and he said:
“Jordan and James Milner are not getting any younger.”
“They’re still top players at this level, of course, and they’ll want to go on and do more.”
“But for Liverpool, if you think about the next five, six, seven years, they’re going to need a midfielder, an eight, who can get goals, who can get double figures.”
“They are heavily reliant on the front three – or the front five if you include Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino.”
“But you always need one of those midfielders that’s going to get in the box and get you goals.”
Liverpool too seems to have made a new midfielder their priority for signing this summer.
