The Netherlands caused a major upset in their last match against South Africa. South Africa had a very strong squad and was considered the favorite to win the trophy. Netherlands put up a spirited performance throughout the tournament and impressed everyone with their grit and character.

Roelof van der Merwe speaking to Somersetccc.com shared his experience with the tournament. He also said that the Netherlands has one eye on the World Cup in 2024 and is getting ready for the challenge.

Getting through the qualifiers, first of all, was massive for us,”

he said.

“Then to be able to enjoy the World Cup in the Super 12s was a really good experience and to win a couple of games was great. Qualifying for the Super 12 stage was the main goal. The qualifiers are a high-pressure situation and there were some good teams in there.”

“If you look at the sporting landscape in the Netherlands, football is massive, so for the cricket team to perform as we did at the World Cup will hopefully inspire more youngsters to play the game.

“The more people who are playing the game, the better the team will be in years to come. In that regard, I think we did a good job. When I started playing for the Netherlands about six years ago, we had almost the same team for the first couple of years.

“Now we’re seeing new faces and new names with a lot of youngsters coming through. There is definitely talent coming up, which is exciting.”

Plans for Next Season

“I’ll be in Taunton until after Christmas and then I’ll be heading over to South Africa for the SA20,”

he explained.

“I’ll be playing for Sunrisers Eastern Cape, which is exciting. It’s been a few years since I’ve played cricket over there, so it’ll be good to get back.”

“We set our markers high every year. We’ve shown people the type of cricket that we’re capable of, especially in white-ball cricket. At times we’ve played some great red-ball cricket too. I think we just need a little bit more consistency.

“There are a lot of good teams out there, but we’ve shown that we can compete in both red and white ball, so three trophies would be a good season.”
