The start of a “new era” at Manchester United

Manchester United are not enjoying the best of times at the moment. The Red Devils have sacked Erik Ten Hag who promised to end the dominating era of Pep Guardiola and Jürgen Klopp. However, not only he failed to do so, he was sacked in an embarrassing fashion.

Although, United have won two trophies in the tenure of Ten Hag, their performance in the league has been abysmal. Such was the downfall, that even the rival fanbases wanted Ten Hag to remain on board.

Now, the club have appointed former Sporting CP coach Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese is relatively a young manager, but has shined in the Portuguese league. Under him talents like Quenda and Gyokeres have taken their game to next level. It is felt that the 39-year old can develop and bring out the best from the young lads in Manchester.

Amorim has won five titles as the manager of Sporting that includes two league titles. He can proudly flex his win percentage of 71% averaging 2.4 points per game. His stats as a manager till now is simply sensational.

But is he the correct man to lead Manchester United back to glory? Ten Hag also had a brilliant profile back at Ajax but failed to deliver at Old Trafford. The Premier league is completely different ball game and it’s very difficult to adapt even as a manager. Quite an uphill task ahead for Amorim.

What style of football can we expect from Amorim-ball?

In Portugal, Ruben Amorim is widely praised for his beautiful and offensive style of football. Watching his team play was a treat to the eyes of the neutrals but nightmare for the rivals. Fans are expecting him to deliver similar results at the Premier league as well.

Amorim is the seventh Man United manager to take the seat since Sir Alex Ferguson retired. His predecessors tried different ways to implement their football but no one could actually settle the club from demolition.

As per the data collected from The Coaches’ Voice, the Portuguese uses a three at the back set up defensively. He keeps a high line, and makes his team press rigorously throughout ninety minutes. Instead of playing wide, he sticks his wingers as number tens’ behind the striker. This adds variation to the attack.

While defending, his team closes down the spaces centrally to suffocate the opposition. Very often we see them defending with five defenders at the back. This makes his team defensively solid and rigid.

Manchester United share spoils with “age old rivals” Chelsea

Manchester United were held in a stalemate against Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday. However, it was a much improved performance from the Red Devils. Bruno Fernandes gave them the lead in the 70th minute after converting his penalty calmly. However, Moises Caicedo hit a banger to level things just after four minutes.

Both the teams could’ve scored a winner in this game. Rashford and Madueke hit the post from close range. It felt that this fixture was destined to end in a stalemate. United were quite wasteful in front of goal with Zirkzee missing plenty of opportunities. Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes were brilliant for United.

The best player for the Blues’ was Cole Palmer by far. Dictated the tempo of the game and was composed as ever. He failed to leave an impression on the scoresheet but his influence was felt. Maresca will feel lucky to walk away with a draw as United converted only one goal from their xG of 1.96. Meanwhile Chelsea had an xG of 1.11.

Chelsea now sit fourth in the table with eighteen points after ten games. They’ve leapfrogged Arsenal in the table thanks to their superior goal difference. On the other hand, Man United are thirteenth in the table hoping for a miracle from God to send them back where they belong.
