Nuno Espirito Santo starts his Tottenham journey with a brilliant win against Manchester City. A good win for Tottenham, they played how they’ve played Manchester City so many times before.

Since City is a side that tends to keep a lot of possession the only way to beat them is on the counter. Spurs did this brilliantly with players like Son and Moura who are capable of exploiting sides with their pace. Meanwhile, Tottenham defended brilliantly they defended as a unit. Moreover, Spurs had a lot of attempts going forwards and should have put some of them away. In the absence of Harry Kane, it was once more Son who stepped up to the mark. With his precise finish in the 55th minute, he scored the winning goal.

Tottenham Manchester City, Six Sports

This was a very disappointing way to start the season for Manchester City. They lacked convicting and their tempo was slow for most of the game. For instance, in the Community Shield against Leicester City, they were sloppy and couldn’t finish their chances. Manchester City were playing a high line and every time Tottenham tried to hit them on the counter they were successful. Pep Guardiola didn’t make the required changes at halftime and had to pay the price for that.

Meanwhile, Japhet Tanganga was the best player on the field. He was immense defensively, especially the number of times he was in 2v1 situations against Grealish and Sterling. He was successful at keeping them at the bay moreover he was very aggressive.

This game really did show City are in desperate need of a striker. The chances the Torres wasn’t able to finishes are the chances Kane does. They would really fall behind in the race if they don’t sign a striker. Meanwhile, Gabriel Jesus isn’t the man to fill in Aguero’s shoes.

What’s next for Tottenham and Manchester City?

Manchester City play Norwich City at home on 21 August. Meanwhile, Tottenham play Wolves at the Molineux Stadium on 22 August.
