Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham are keeping an eye on Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams amidst his stunning run of form at the EURO. The Lillywhites displayed glimpses of immense potential in Postecoglou’s first season in-charge.
However, the journey was far from smooth for Spurs with key players being out due to injury. Spurs finished the campaign with 66 points. They were agonizingly short of qualifying for the Champions League securing 5th place, with just 2 points behind Unai Emery’s Aston Villa.
Although, it was still an improvement as they finished 8th in the 2022-23 campaign. Like many other Premier League teams, Tottenham are also looking to reinforce their roster. Postecoglou will be keen to sign quality players to increase squad depth in case of injuries.
However, Spurs have only managed to secure Timo Werner from RB Leipzig until now. Moreover, the EUROs have somewhat put a hold on transfer activities for many top teams. Especially, considering the changes in valuation of players due to their performances on Europe’s grandest stage of them all.
But, at the same time Spurs will have the opportunity to assess their potential targets once more. Needless to say, Postecoglou would have loved to have new signings as soon as possible so that he could employ them in pre-season.
Tottenham want Atheltic Bilbao’s Nico Williams!
Nico Williams was crucial in Althetic Bilbao’s success this season. Ernesto Valverde’s side went on to secure a 5th place finish and qualify for Europa League. Moreover, they would also clinch the Copa del Rey this campaign.
Moreover, Williams has been immensely impressive with Spain at the EURO. The 21-year old was simply amazing against Italy in the Group Stage. The winger was opening Italy’s defense willingly with his pace and dribbling abilities. Additionally, the 21-year old also got into great attacking positions finding space from Alvaro Morata’s cross and narrowly missing out on a headed goal. Williams was instrumental in the game creating numerous chances and also forcing the own goal that led to Spain’s victory.
Subsequently, Williams was given the Player of the Match Award. Many clubs are eyeing the 21-year old and now Bilbao are concerned. However, Williams hasn’t shown any intentions of leaving Bilbao just yet. Nico is currently priced at £46 million. But, considering his amazing performances, his price is surely to surge.
Moreover, if the 21-year old wants to leave, Bilbao will be hoping to cash-in big time on the Spaniard.
Why do Spurs fancy the 21-year old?
Tottenham consider Nico Williams as a long term replacement for captain Heung-Min Son. Considering that Williams is merely 21 and Son is ageing, the talented winger could be an excellent alternative. Moreover, he could form a deadly duo with Dejan Kulusevski on the other flank making Spurs highly effective on the counter attack.
Adding Williams into the mix with Werner and Richarlison will make Spurs extremely quick up front. Furthermore, Tottenham are also lining up for securing Lille striker Jonathan David. However, Manchester United are competing with Spurs for the Canadian. Postecoglou’s side are making serious moves in the market.
While Tottenham are eyeing Nico Williams right now, several clubs have made an enquiry way before the EURO. London rivals Chelsea had Williams on shortlist last summer but they would opt for Cole Palmer from Manchester City. Arsenal have also discussed a probable move for the Spaniard. Moreover, Liverpool are also keeping a close eye on the winger.
If Williams chooses to remain in Spain, Barcelona is also keen on the 21-year old. However, financial restrictions may not be in favor of the Blaugrana. Williams may end up continuing at Bilbao after all!
