With Thomas Tuchel, who shepherded Chelsea to their unforgettable 2021 Champions League triumph, preparing to take up his biggest challenge yet—a World Cup with England—her first club president ever is backing her. Before plunging into the fray of the Three Lions’ selection controversy, the German tactician took some well-deserved rest with his old Chelsea squad mates.
That move probably affected Chelsea fans the way a soap opera finale does; meanwhile, Mrs. Tuchel met casually with some of his 2021 Champions League heroes. Jorginho (currently at Arsenal), Reece James, Trevoh Chalobah, Ben Chilwell and Mason Mount (who’s still rankling Blues fans move to Manchester United) were all there. Letting it out to Instagram through a picture posted to her Fotografnad live, Jorgihno’s fiancée Cat Cavelli revealed the reunion. To quote Horace Granville Bailey, Chelsea fans certainly dreamt of this kind of throwback.
Tuchel’s 2021 Champions League Legacy Still Shines Bright
Of course, this group etched their legacy into football folklore when they stunned Manchester City in the 2021 final. The mastermind behind a perfect game plan that turned Pep Guardiola’s tactical masterclass into a Shakespearean tragedy was Tuchel, with Kai Havertz the scorer of a winner.
Chalobah, however, was not even part of that campaign as he was made available to Tuchel’s first team the following year. His players have gone to England’s biggest clubs, but his admiration for them still persists.
His Next Big Test: England’s World Cup Quest
This was all fun and nostalgia to begin with, but Tuchel knows that his biggest test is just around the corner. As England boss since October, he has faced his share of hurdles: injuries, media scans, and, of course, dodging the dreaded question of whether football managers should work from home.
He faces a huge decision now — just his first squad selection is due — with which head coach Claudio Ranieri has delegated control. The strain is mounting and Albania and Latvia remain to play in the World Cup qualifiers later this month. England fans are ruthless and Tuchel has shown more than enough that he loves pressure.
