Uncertainty continues to rise around the Champions League winning left-back

New Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has excluded Ben Chilwell from the squad, with the player still training with the reserve team. There were rumors that the Blues would sell him, but now with the transfer window closed, Chilwell is still at Chelsea. Tod Boehly has successfully sold multiple first-team players, including Romelu Lukaku, Ian Maatsen, Raheem Sterling, Armando Broja, and Trevoh Chalobah.

Soon, Ben Chilwell might be on this list of outgoing players. Several reports are suggesting that he might end up joining the Turkish giants, Fenerbahce. According to SBNation, the Turkish transfer window is still open, till September 18. So, there is a chance of business for Chelsea.

Reason for excluding Ben Chilwell

From the first few games, it is clearly visible that Enzo Maresca has trusted Marc Cucurella for the left-back position. On top of that, Renato Veiga is also doing well as a second choice left-back. So, there is no space left for Chilwell. A player of his caliber and experience would not want to be a third choice left-back.

He was once, the first choice left-back at Chelsea. Chilwell helped the Blues lift the Champions League trophy in 2021 and was a pivotal figure under Thomas Tuchel. But injuries ruined his career. In the last two seasons, he has been underperforming due to his injuries, and has missed majority of the games.

Chelsea’s transfer window

Since the takeover of Clearlake Capital, the club is being reconstructed from the core. Several managerial appointments, changes in players and coaching staff, clearly indicates that the Blues are in a transition period. At this time, Chelsea need more and more money because they want to bring in players who can stabilize the dressing room with their talent and consistent performances.

Chelsea raised almost £94.5 million with the sales of Omari Hutchinson to Ipswitch Town for £22m, Ian Maatsen to Aston Villa for £37.5m, and Lewis Hall to Newcastle United for £35m. On top of that, the Blues also sold Romelu Lukaku to Napoli for €30m.

If Chelsea can sell Ben Chilwell as well, they will have a very profitable transfer window. This profit will certainly help them in their future transfer activities.

On the other hand, the Blues have always dreamt of signing the world-class Nigerian striker, Victor Osimhen, but they were unable to sign him in this transfer window. Earlier, he had a release clause of £113 million. With no deal place with Chelsea, Galatasaray signed Osimhen on loan. According to multiple reports, this loan move will reduce Osimhen’s release clause. Clubs like Chelsea, Arsenal, and Paris Saint-Germain will try to sign Osimhen in the January transfer window.

Chelsea have already signed great talents this summer, which includes Jadon Sancho, Joao Felix, Pedro Neto, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Guiu, Omari Kellyman, and Estevao Willian. If they can add Victor Osimhen to this squad in next summer transfer window, it will make a formidable attacking front line for the Blues, that will have Christopher Nkunku and Cole Palmer on both wings and Victor Osimhen in the number nine position.

Chilwell’s Future at Chelsea

At this moment, most of the senior first-team players are leaving Chelsea. This squad is full of young players. So, they need someone who can lead them towards a successful season. In this crucial time, the Blues need a leader like Ben Chilwell. He might not be playing a lot of games for the Blues, but his presence in the dressing room is very important.

The Blues have been planning to revive their past glory under the ownership of Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital Group. However, it has been very chaotic so far. Last season, Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea achieved the European Conference League spot, which considered far from being ideal for the club.

Enzo Maresca guided Leicester City towards Premier League promotion. So, the Italian manager might bring a winning mentality to the Chelsea dressing room. During the past few seasons, the Blues have been lacking a winning mentality, which can be fulfilled by Maresca.
