Washington Homecoming: Why Chelsea’s Young Gun is Back

Life is like footballs, rollercoasters, thrilling, unpredictable, at times nausea inducing. Chelsea’s young Brazilian forward Deivid Washington knows this too well. Early in the season, he shook his fake tan off the Santos beaches for unpredictable English weather at Stamford Bridge. He returns to Santos in January 2025, once more in the white shirt.

The Chelsea move was a blunder or a bold step into his development, right? Well, Washington expressed that all of it was part of ‘God’s plan’. It is, therefore, no surprise that his first-team opportunities were limited, given Chelsea’s recent transfer policy of keeping beautiful young footballers as a juveniles collecting Pokémon cards.

Washington’s Chelsea Experience: Lessons Over Minutes

But, Washington didn’t exactly light up Stamford Bridge. He was also given more Under 21 appearances than he got on Premier League pitches with only three senior appearances. But was it all for nothing? Absolutely not.

He trained with players who had been playing professional football for what seems like from the very beginning, like Thiago Silva. Washington conceded that he learned a lot. The experiences of tactical positioning, movement, and dealing with physicality in European football have made him a more complete player.

But sitting on the couch is only so helpful seeing matches from the bench (or from the stands). That’s why the smartest thing Washington did was to go back to Santos to contest the title.

Why he Rejoined Santos: A Matter of the Heart

Washington’s return to Santos is no different from romantic homecomings in Football. Openly, he has admitted that he has wanted all his life to make history with his boyhood club. Washington, in his 19th year, wants to prove himself and is back, hungry. aching knees and longing for nostalgia are not what some players report to their former clubs when they have reached their mid-30s.

Santos was always his first loan option, but he had other possibilities. Why? Because there was unfinished business, so powerful a motivator. ‘I wanted to come here to give everything, to win a title, make history,’ he said. That’s the sort of statement a fan starts to fall in love with a player all over again.
