Derby County manager Wayne Rooney has expressed his feeling of retaining all his players in the January transfer window, including the young left-back Lee Buchanan. Derby County have been hit by a 12 point deduction for sliding into administration, and another 9 point deduction for historical financial breaches under the previous owner. Due to this, the Rams have found themselves at the bottom of the table with 1 point from 20 matches. In addition, Derby is also issued with a transfer embargo by the EFL which leaves Wayne Rooney desperate to hold on to all the squad players he currently possesses.
“None of my players are going anywhere. Obviously, we haven’t got enough players as it is. The way we are trying to play, they are the two most important players on the pitch, so none of my players will be leaving the club this transfer window unless it is to benefit them, whether it is a loan, but that can only happen if we are allowed to bring players in.““Wayne Rooney when asked about the transfer rumor of Lee Buchanan to Celtic.”
Celtics interest in Buchanan
Wayne Rooney’s statement does not come as good news to the Scottish giants Celtic amid their interest in Lee Buchanan as a winter transfer target. Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has used five different players in the left-back position since the start of this season. But none of Liam Scales, Adam Montgomery, Boli Bolingoly or Josip Juranovic has quite done the job for their manager. Celtic have been keeping an eye on Buchanan for months and sent top scout Mick Doherty to watch the young left-back in action last month(claimed by The Scottish Sun). The interest from the Scottish side seems concrete and they will be hoping the crisis hit Derby side cave in the January transfer window and make a deal.
Will Rooney let go of Lee Buchanan in the January window?
Lee Buchanan came through the academy of Derby County and burst onto the scene in 2019 making his senior debut against Hull City. He has since cemented a permanent place in the starting lineup under manager Wayne Rooney. The young English left-back has made 55 EFL Championship appearances for The Rams, 15 of which came this season. Buchanan has quickly turned a lot of heads and has gathered interest from a number of clubs.
The opportunity to switch sides with the Scottish club Celtic might seem to be very lucrative to Buchanan. The prospect of European Football will be difficult to turn down. But the left-back might have to stay put in the January transfer window. Buchanan has attracted interest from other clubs before. He was heavily linked with Arsenal and Nottingham Forrest reportedly had at least one bid turned down by Derby for the 20-year-old left-back.
Buchanan has a year left on his contract but the club has the option to extend the contract for another 12 months. And with Rooney adamant about none of his players leaving, it seems like a move in the winter transfer window might be difficult to materialize. However, a move to The Hoops in the summer window is certainly possible.
In the meantime, the administration will look to find new owners for the club. Which could persuade some players including Buchanan to sign a new contract with the club.
