West Ham are likely to battle Sporting Lisbon over 20-year old, Zeno Debast. The Belgian defender is a highly-rated center back who has risen through the ranks at Anderlecht.
Sporting CP were closing in on the Belgian’s signature. However, West Ham have now entered the race with a strong financial offer for the defender.
Debast to the Hammers: A revenge over Amorim?
Since David Moyes‘ departure was confirmed, the Hammers were looking for a new boss. Sporting’s Ruben Amorim was identified as a potential candidate. Amorim has helped Sporting play an attractive brand of football guiding them to their second league title win in over 20 years.
Ruben Amorim met with David Sullivan, West Ham’s Chairman, but decided to opt out of the move. Amorim even went as far as stating that he made a mistake holding talks in the first place. This, in turn, infuriated the Hammers.
Considering Sporting’s heavy interest in Debast, it is rumored that the Hammers may hijack the deal in an attempt to get back at the Portuguese.
Why Zeno Debast?
The 20-year old Belgian has impressed with his stellar performances this season. The defender has averaged 1.5 tackles, 1 interception and 4.7 clearances per game in 31 league games for Anderlecht.
Debast is tall, strong, and good in the air and on the ball. He could be a key addition for the Hammers. Sporting have reportedly offered £13.7 million for the 20-year old Belgian.
West Ham or Sporting? What will Debast Choose?
While West Ham might offer a better contract, Sporting’s Champions League prospects could lure away the Belgian.
Financially speaking, the Hammers may make it tempting for both Debast and Anderlecht. Therefore, making it difficult for Sporting to match their offer. However, Sporting’s Champions League qualification will provide the Belgian a platform to shine on Europe’s greatest stage.
Will Debast make a move to Europe’s number one domestic league by choosing the Hammers? Or will he he represent the Portuguese Champions in Europe’s grandest stage?
