According to reports, Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa are keen to land PSG and Dutch midfielder Gini Wijnaldum in the upcoming transfer window.

Georginio Wijnaldum spends five seasons at Steven Gerrard’s former side, Liverpool. But the Dutch midfielder joined Paris Saint-Germain in the summer after his contract expired with the reds. The midfielder had a very successful time in Liverpool colors.

But his switch to the French giants has not gone exactly to plan. Wijnaldum has failed to really impress Mauricio Pochettino and his staff and the Paris Saint-Germain faithful. In conclusion, he has been unable to cement his spot in the starting lineup. The Dutch midfielder has made a total of 28 appearances in all competitions this term. In this time he has recorded three goals and two assists, (stats via Transfermarkt)

Aston Villa had a fantastic January transfer window. The club brought in Phillipe Coutinho on loan from Barcelona and Lucas Digne on a permanent deal from Everton. Fichajes have reported that Steven Gerrard is looking to bolster his midfield options and is interested in signing Georginio Wijnaldum from PSG.

Is Georginio Wijnaldum the perfect midfield option for Aston Villa and Steven Gerrard?

Steven Gerrard currently has Douglas Luiz, John McGinn, Marvelous Nakamba, and Jacob Ramsey as midfield options. But reports suggest that Aston Villa’s midfield general Douglas Luiz is set to leave Villa Park next summer. The club views Georginio Wijnaldum as the perfect replacement for the potentially outgoing Douglas Luiz.

The Dutch midfielder was an integral part of Liverpool’s title-winning side in 2020. Firstly, the midfielder is brilliant at controlling the tempo of the game from the heart of the midfield. He is also famous for his impressive high-tempo pressing play in the middle of the park.

We have already seen Stevan Gerrard use his Liverpool links and land, Phillipe Coutinho, on loan. Georginio Wijnaldum might turn out to be the next former Liverpool man Gerrard signs. The midfielder looks to be the perfect fit in the Aston Villa midfield. Firstly, his experience could be key for the development of academy prospect Jacob Ramsey. Secondly, signing Wijnaldum could also help Aston Villa climb the next step of the ladder in pursuit of being a top English club.
