Sverre Nypan chooses Manchester City over Arsenal

Manchester City

Manchester City have officially completed their fifth summer signing in this transfer window. They have completed the signing of 18-year-old Norwegian midfielder Sverre Nypan from Rosenborg. This deal was stated to be worth around £12.5 million. But he will be immediately loaned back to Girona. This deal reflects how a team like Manchester City is also focused on growing young players in their team. Sverre Nypan, who was close to going for Arsenal in both January and June, but the player chose to go for Man City. While Pep’s Man City finished third in the Premier League after winning it for many seasons. He will again look to continue his winning form with the Cityzens both in England and Europe next season. With Sverre Nypan, it makes the Cityzens’ fifth signing before the next season. As they will also bring back their dominance in the league they used to have.

Who is Sverre Nypan, and why does he matter?

Sverre Nypan is one of Norway’s most exciting young talented midfielders. Born in 2006, the 18-year-old has made quite a name for himself in the Norwegian Eliteserien League with his team, Rosenborg. He also became their youngest player to play at the age of 15 for the team. Debuting only in 2022 at just 15 years. He also became the team’s youngest goal-scorer at just the age of 16 years and 145 days. In the very last 2024-25 season, he scored a total of 8 goals and registered 7 assists in just 29 matches for his team. Despite being only at 18 years old. Sverre Nypan, known for excellent gameplay with mature passing in the game, has made him an influential player. Attracting the interest of top European teams like Arsenal and Man City.

Arsenal’s interest and the Challenges faced by Sverre Nypan:

Due to his excellent gameplay with mature passing in the game at just the age of 18. The scouts from Arsenal have been following the player for over a year. Arsenal, with manager Mikel Arteta and director Edu, saw him as a perfect youngster, who can grow and develop with the Gunners in the future. The Gunners’ management saw him as a future star who can grow and take up the role of his countrymen like Martin Ødegaard does for the Gunners. They even invited the player, Sverre Nypan, to discuss and explain to him about their plans for him. But they did not submit any bid for the player. As they hoped to get him at a cheaper fee. But Man City under Pep stepped in for the player, ready to pay the Rosenborg their asking price for the player.

Manchester City’s plan for Sverre Nypan

Sverre Nypan is not the only player Pep’s Man City have got this summer transfer window. This includes players like  Rayan Aït-Nouri, Rayan Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders, Marcus Bettinelli, and now finally Sverre Nypan. With a total spending exceeding €340 million for all these players in this transfer window. Each of these transfers for the Cityzens under Pep perfectly fits his vision for the long-term. It is basically to reclaim their Domestic and European dominance, which they failed to get this season. As for Sverre Nypan, he will not join the Man City first team this season. He will move to Girona on a season-long loan under the same City groups for further growth and development.

Author’s opinion:

With Sverre Nypan, it’s Man City’s fifth summer signing, which shows how much they are to develop and correct the mistakes going into the next season. But Man City believe that the player is still not ready to play at a higher level like the Premier League. So they want him to grow in the Spanish La Liga under their close guidance for long-term development.
