Leclerc grabs pole position in Monza! – Italian GP Qualifying

Ferrari Charles Leclerc

Charles Leclerc secured his eighth pole position of the 2022 season at the Italian GP qualifying after keeping Max Verstappen at bay.

Formula 1 qualifying for the Italian GP saw Charles Leclerc grab pole position in front of the delighted Tifosi.

Max Verstappen, Carlos Sainz, Sergio Perez, and Lewis Hamilton were going to take the grid penalty for Sunday’s race.

This meant that Leclerc was all but assured of starting from pole on Sunday. Nevertheless, the Monegasque driver secured the pole position much to the delight of Tifosi by delivering the fastest time in qualifying.

Leclerc set the fastest time of 1.20.161 ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in Q3. Verstappen tried to chase down the time in his last and final attempt in Q3, however, the Dutchman was 0.145 seconds off Leclerc.

Carlos Sainz set the 3rd fastest time with 1.20.429, just 0.268 seconds off his teammate. Perez came home in P4.

However, Verstappen, Sainz, and Perez are all going to receive grid penalties for the main race. This means George Russell will start in the front row alongside Leclerc on Sunday.

Nyck de Vries also showcased some impressive driving for his first time driving an F1 car in Qualifying. de Vries is set to replace Albon on Sunday due to his appendicitis.

Can Charles Leclerc take the victory at Ferrari’s home once again or will Verstappen once again show an amazing recovery drive? Can Verstappen end his run of bad luck of Monza finally this year?

We will know it in the main race on Sunday.
