Enzo Maresca already impressed with midfielder before taking charge at Chelsea

Chelsea

Chelsea fell since the switch to Ted Boehly’s American ownership from that of Roman Abramovic. Since 2022, there have been a lot of impulsive purchases for the squad. Although promising, most of the players could not live up to the expectations or the price tag. Getting rid of high-profile coaches is ingrained in Chelsea’s blood. Mauricio Pochettino had a one-year spell at the club, and his job came to an end even after securing a spot in European football. Chelsea has found new hope in Enzo Maresca, who is already a fan of young Romeo Lavia. Amongst all the other flops in Chelsea, £60m worth Lavia stands out, according to the former Leicester City coach. Maresca is in a good relationship with Lavia and finds him to be a key player for Chelsea in the upcoming 24/25 season. Lavia demonstrates huge potential for the squad.

Why Maresca Trusts Lavia for Chelsea’s Upcoming Season

Romeo Lavia spent the previous season on the sidelines after picking up an injury. He has made only one appearance at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League. However, it is important to note that Lavia is a former graduate of Manchester City, where Marseca was in charge of the Elite Development Squad (EDS). Both have fostered a good relationship since then. It is also important to note that before substantiating himself at Chelsea, Lavia was in demand for top PL clubs. He was the top priority for Jurgen Klopp, who was in dire need of a deep-lying midfielder. Boehly’s shrewd transfer tactic has lured the young gun away from Anfield, but proving himself still remains undiagnosed. But the old relationship with Maresca really makes Lavia cement his position as the first choice for Chelsea.

London is Blue Podcast: Ben Jacobs

It is true that Chelsea midfielders have failed to deliver in top form for the past few years. That can quite be blamed on the new “American Soccer” philosophy. Sports commentator Ben Jacobs, however, feels Cole Palmer’s recent form to that of Lavia’s reassurance could be beneficial for the Blues. A similar style of Manchester City mentality can be followed under Enzo Maresca. He says;

“His squad knowledge also impressed. He has a pre-existing relationship with Romeo Lavia and Cole Palmer, that is very useful, It’s hard to put the Chelsea players into the 4-3-3 actually. If you go in midfield and decide it’s Fernandez and Caicedo, well, he knows Lavia and he loves Lavia, and if Connor Gallagher stays then everyone else, including Cole Palmer has to move forwards.”

It would be a delight to see the staggering form of the former Southampton lad and the Chelsea fans cannot hold their horses for the upcoming season. The team is a strong contender for the UEFA Europa Conference League. after the departure of Mauricio Pochetinno
