Just after one season at Stamford Bridge, Argentina manager Pochettino saw himself exiting the prestigious doors. While one great coach goes out, in Chelsea’s heritage, another one gets in instantaneously. Something similar happened before the unveiling of the 24/25 season, as Enzo Maresca from Leicester City got to take the sidelines. The Italian manager, who is promised a lengthy contract, shows the board has confidence in him. This long term plan comes with a fine rebuild, and Maresca is subjected to refining the backline with Chalobah, a candidate deemed not suitable for the future lineup at Chelsea. The defence is going through major reconstruction, with legendary defender Thiago Silva already departing for Brazil. Meanwhile, the Blues have signed Tosin Adarabioyo on a free transfer. Chalobah, who was instrumental under Pochettino, finds himself on shaky ground, with new defenders coming on board.
Chalobah in Chelsea finds himself under threat: Maresca looking for competent replacements
Maresca has high doubts about the 24 year old centre back. He is inexperienced and also lacks confidence. Maresca is a visionary and aligns with Pep Guardiola’s philosophy. This is due to his being in close touch with the former Bayern and Barcelona manager, Maresca, who was responsible for Manchester City’s Elite Development Squad (EDS). During that time, he fostered relationships with future stars Cole Palmer and Romeo Lavia. The Italian expects a similar attitude from all of his players. Somewhere he feels Chalobah, and certain few cannot live up to his expectations. Another player who is on the list for the transfer window is Levi Colwill, who was also a regular under Pochettino.
Club legend and former Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard has described Chalobah as “Fantastic“. Chalobah has been versatile and often deployed in the wings. With 80 appearances already for the Blues, Chalobah is uncertain of completing 100 when Maresca takes charge. A lot of Premier League clubs would be interested in acquiring the young centerback. Mid-table English clubs as well as clubs from overseas could benefit a lot from Trevoh Chalobah. When looking at other players at the club, it would be difficult at this stage to say the club should be selling him ahead of someone like Axel Disasi.
