Txiki preparing for another tactical transfer window for Manchester City

Manchester City

Txiki Begiristain is plotting yet another terrific transfer for Manchester City. The 59-year old is the Sporting Director at Etihad since the past 12 years. Txiki has supervised many incredible transfers with the Citizens.

City’s success of late has handed them with enough capital to spend freely and buy the best in the market. Moreover, City’s achievements continue to upgrade. The Citizens won the historic treble last season. Additionally, City became the first team in the league’s history to achieve a premier league quadruple after edging out Arsenal.

Begiristain was the Director of Football in Barcelona in 2010. He joined Manchester City in 2012. City have won the premier league seven times alongside the historic treble under Begiristain’s tenure.

Txiki targets Werder Bremen goalkeeper for Manchester City!

Manchester City are considering to buy Michael Zetterer from Werder Bremen, according to reports. We could be witnessing a Deja Vu with Txiki having bought Stefan Ortega in similar circumstances from Germany in 2022.

Stefan Ortega has proven himself at the Etihad. Ortega has stepped up in Ederson’s absence and has been vital for City in between the sticks. The German saved 20 of the 27 shots conceded on goal. Additionally, Ortega has a save percentage of 74.1% while Ederson has 70.7%.

Ederson’s future at City remains uncertain. The Brazilian is heavily linked with a move to Saudi with Al-Ittihad and Al-Nassr looking for the 30-year old’s signature. Ortega could replace Ederson at City. However, The Manchester Blues could opt for a younger alternative in the form of 28-year old Michael Zetterer.

Who is Michael Zetterer: Why do City want him?

Zetterer started his senior professional career playing for SpVgg Unterhaching in 2013. Moreover, The German served as a reserve goalkeeper in 2013-14.

The goalkeeper made a move to Werder Bremen in 2015 for €100,000. However, Zetterer was third in line behind Raphael Wolf and Koeen Casteels. Although, the goalkeeper was largely kept out of action due to fractures in 2015 and 2016. A surgery in 2017 to reduce further complications stalled Zetterer’s career even more.

In a bid to revive his career, Zetterer agreed to a short-term loan move to Austria Klagenfurt in 2019. Followingly, the 28-year old was loaned out by PEC Zwolle for a couple of years until 2021. He made his Bundesliga debut for Bremen in 2022.

So far, Zetterer has made 150 appearances in his career. A move to Manchester City will surely be the highlight of his career. Zetterer made 27 appearances in the Bundesliga this season, saving 92 out of 128 shots on target.

The German boasts an impressive save percentage of 74.2. The number closely mimics Ortega’s stint at City and Txiki is considering moving in for Zetterer.

Is Zetterer the right choice for City?

Zetterer is currently valued at €2.65 million in the transfer market. Whilst an economic option, Zetterer hasn’t really proven himself at a big stage yet. Playing for one of the best teams of this generation could prove problematic for the 28-year old.

Additionally, the pressure of proving yourself in Europe’s best league could be difficult to handle for Zetterer. Moreover, Ortega was a lot more experienced than Zetterer when City bought him. Ortega already had 283 appearances in his bag before joining City while Zetterer has merely made 150.

This could swing both-ways for Manchester City. But if Ederson leaves, Zetterer wouldn’t be a bad option for the Manchester Blues. While slightly risky, City could go with the trusted judgment of Txiki and pursue Werder Bremen for the goalkeeper.

Much will depend on Ederson’s decision. However, it’s relieving for City fans to know that the management is prepared for the upcoming situation.
