On a three-year contract, subject to international clearance and a work permit, Manchester City Women have signed meaningful asset Sydney Lohmann from Bayern Munich (Germany). The 25-year -old, who leaves Bavaria after nine illustrious seasons, looks to take on a new challenge in the Women’s Super League (WSL) for personal development.
A Legacy of Success at Bayern
Lohmann was acquired by Bayern at the age of 17 in 2016, although making her first pro appearance in 2017. Moreover, by the end of her two-year stint with the club, she had become a core player. She had played 167 times (31 goals). During her time at the club, she became a mainstay member, appearing 167 times (31 goals). In all those years, Bayern won four Bundesliga titles (2020/21, 2022/23, 2023/24, 2024/25) and a DFB-Pokal and a German Supercup. While also reaching an enormous historic milestone for Lohmann as the domestic double in her last year at the club. With her at the club, she nonetheless contributed to all of the above. Lohmann was also the highest scoring midfielder in the Bundesliga during the 2020/21 season with an astonishing 10 league goals in 20 league appearances.
Lohmann only missed time once throughout her years, however, due to a hip injury in the 2021/22 season. Moreover, Bayern lost the Bundesliga title to Wolfsburg that season. Other than that, she was a pivotal player for Bayern in those seasons. She has also produced memorable moments in those seasons as well, including scoring Bayern Women’s 1,000th Bundesliga goal in addition to a 5-2 win against Arsenal in the 2024 UEFA Women’s Champions League.
International Pedigree and Playing Style
Lohmann has represented Germany 39 times (6 goals) since making her senior national team debut in 2018. She also offers further elite experience at tournament level. She was part of Germany’s Euro 2022 runners-up which was famously going toe-to-toe with City legend Jill Scott in the final at Wembley as well as added an Olympic bronze medal to her collection after competing together in Tokyo 2024. And she’s currently playing at Euro 2025, and she’s already alongside her new City teammate Rebecca Knaak.
Lohmann is physically strong, technically gifted and an attacking threat: she is able to harness her creativity with a tigerish pressing game and the Director of Football Therese Sjogran has heralded her “winning form” with the knowledge and experience to “change a game at this level and to do it with power, vision or positivity on the ball”.
