Manchester United Squad 2025-26: Ready to Compete Again?

Manchester United

Will the new Manchester United squad come up with a better performance in the upcoming season? That’s the big question. If someone had asked this same question a few years ago, people would have laughed it away. But things are quite different now at Manchester United. The current Manchester United has turned into a midtable club. Once considered the best club in Europe, Manchester United no longer consistently make top-four finishes anymore. The Red Devils finished 15th last season which is the worst finish till date. The situation is so dire that before thinking about winning titles, Manchester United must return to the top four. Manchester United’s Portuguese manager Ruben Amorim has a job on hand. The club is supporting the coach with the necessary players. Some big names might leave, too. With everything kept aside, Manchester United have begun their pre-season already. Let’s look at the current scenario of this ‘new’ Manchester United squad for the 2025-26 season.

Manchester United’s Latest Inclusions

Yes, Manchester United are active in the summer transfer window. But the progress report isn’t going to calm down a cult supporter of the club. The club was most vulnerable in their attacking third. Matheus Cunha has joined Manchester United after spending a solid season at Wolves. But only Cunha cannot take the responsibility of scoring double digits. Thus, Manchester United are pursuing the transfer of Bryan Mbuemo from Brentford. But the Bees are all over the Devils. Brentford are repeatedly rejecting bids. On the other hand, Manchester United are also improving their bids after bids. Although Mbuemo is expected to sign for Manchester United in the coming weeks, nothing is certain. This negotiation has turned into a battle of ego. But other than Cunha, the club hasn’t been able to sign another new forward to the squad. Other than Cunha, Manchester United have sealed the deal of young Diego Leon. Leon is the first ever Paraguayan to represent Man United. The left-back also began training at Carrington this week. The 18-year-old wonderkid is going to become a good backup option for Ruben Amorim. The club from Manchester have brought in another young talent. Enzo Kana-Biyik has officially joined from Le Havre. But his game time in the main roster is doubtful as he hasn’t played any senior-level match so far.

Probable Exits from the Squad

Big names are expected to leave Manchester United. Many footballers haven’t understood the system of Amorim yet. Ruben Amorim also wants some players to leave. Among those names, Marcus Rashford’s departure is evident. The homegrown talent of Manchester is looking for clubs. After failing to capture Nico Williams, Barcelona now want to seal the deal with Marcus Rashford. Aston Villa won’t trigger the release clause and Ruben Amorim has no place for Rashford in his system. Jadon Sancho’s career is unsettled now. Although the English international has joined Manchester United after a loan spell with Chelsea, he might leave too. But the probable departure of Alejandro Garnacho is shocking. He didn’t have a bad spell at Manchester United like the others yet the club has put him on the transfer list. After spending many seasons, veteran defender Victor Lindelöf has left Manchester United. Another club legend, Jonny Evans, has also followed the same path. Manchester United have also officially announced that the club has released Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen.

Author’s Opinion: Overall Assessment of the Squad

Judging by the overall squad so far, Manchester United have focused on building a young, youthful team. Ruben Amorim wants to play his side in a probable 3-4-3 formation. With players like Mainoo, Amad, Yoro, Hoijlund and Mount, this system finds flexibility. With forwards like Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbuemo, Manchester United can play high-pressing football. But the team still lacks depth in midfield. The team must add another top playmaker to the team to take pressure off Bruno. In the backline, Maguire and Yoro are the mainstays. Although Lisandro Martinez has joined training after full recovery, his consistency in getting sidelined for months can cause trouble again. But Amorim has a plan of playing Ugarte and Casemiro as a double pivot. But this will disrupt the high-pressure football Amorim wants to execute. So, Manchester United still have problems to sort out. The Red Devils must act fast if they wish to compete again at the big stage.
