One-time Manchester United captain Roy Keane has never shied away from speaking his mind, and he didn’t do so in the case of Eberechi Eze. The Three Lions comfortably won the World Cup Qualifier game against Andorra. Roy Keane was not impressed with Eberechi Eze‘s show.
Eberechi Eze vs. Andorra: Roy Keane views
Arsenal‘s Eze was presented with a golden opportunity to establish himself at international level. Supporters were eagerly anticipating him taking the field, with the hope that he would bring flair and creativity to the team. Keane believed that Eze didn’t make his influence felt, though. In an interview after the game, the Irish pundit opined that Eze was overly cautious and risk-averse on the ball.
Roy Keaneโs Statements:
As quoted by Keane, youngster players have to be prepared to take risks when presented with the option. Keane described that international football is not all about being catered but getting recognized. “You don’t get many opportunities at this stage,” continued Keane to describe how Eze had to work harder and demonstrate more energy.
With England dominating possession and recording an easy win, Keane was concerned with the individual performance. He acknowledged Eze is talented but asked if he wishes to leave his footprint. For Keane, playing simply to hold possession and not commit errors is insufficient. He needs players to be accountable, to create opportunities, and to display character.
Fan Speculations:
The remarks created outrage among supporters and commentators. Some were of Keane’s view, that Eze must be more of a risk-taker if he is to remain in the England team. Others criticized the former Palace man for being overly harsh, saying that this was his first real chance and he might possibly need some time to settle.
Ezeโs Quality:
In spite of the criticism, Eze is still well-rated for his vision and ball ability. England manager Gareth Southgate himself has previously talked about giving players time and support. The question now is whether Eze will be given another opportunity to shine in future matches or not.
Authorโs Insight:
Keane’s harsh words are tough love, reminding Eze that the world game is tough. To silence the critics, the midfielder must play more from the front and demonstrate the same self-assurance he does at club level.
