Alexandre Lacazette has started to come to life at Arsenal after impressive performances in recent weeks. Arsenal are currently one of the most in-form sides in Europe since they are fighting for a top-four spot. They have been scoring well and have also been defensively sounded in that process. However, they recently lost 0-2 to Liverpool which must have woken them up.
The Frenchman has been vital in Arsenal’s resurgence this season. The Gunners had a very poor start to their season but are very threatening right now. However, Arsenal are now the favorites to finish fourth on the table. Mikel Arteta had to part ways with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang due to disciplinary issues which was a bold call by the Spaniard.
Lacazette since then has stepped up his game and the absence of Aubameyang has not been felt in the squad. Although he has not been scoring in each and every game but his contribution to the game have been crucial for Arsenal. He has registered seven assists in the last 11 games making him the joint sixth-most assist getter in the Premier League.
He is now getting compared to the likes of Harry Kane and Roberto Firmino as his playing style has now become similar to that of those two other strikers. However, Lacazette still presses more and provides more shot-creating actions than Harry Kane (as per fbref). However, he still has to improve his pace in getting into positions to score and be more clinical with his finishes.
Why Arsenal should offer Alexandre Lacazette a new contract?
Alexandre Lacazette has a contract expiring at the end of this season with Arsenal. Moreover, there are still no confirmations of an extension agreed between the two parties. Eddie Nketiah has a similar contractual situation to that of Lacazette. In simple words, Arsenal will be left with no strikers at the end of the season if they do not renew the contracts.
Lacazette’s contribution has been massive for Arsenal in the last two months. Moreover, the club is also searching for strikers in the summer. Many may argue that Lacazette does not score often, however, he does make it easy for his teammates. In addition, he can be the backup striker for Arsenal if the Gunners opt to sign a big name in the summer.
The Frenchman can work on his scoring abilities for the next season. Moreover, he already creates a lot of chances to start with. There are still a few more years left in Lacazette and he is capable of returning those rewards. Arsenal will only have to sign one more striker in the summer and not more if they renew Lacazette’s contract.
Lacazette has also contributed to the growth of Arsenal’s youngsters. Arsenal could perhaps show a bit of faith in Lacazette by offering him a new contract. There were talks linking him to a reunion with his former club Lyon. However, that could be avoided if the Gunners and the Frenchman agree to new fresh terms for the next season.
