Reports suggest Chelsea are keeping close tabs on Barcelona defender.
Chelsea keeping watch on Barcelona defender
Chelsea has been quite active discovering new players all over Europe. And once again Eric Garcia’s name pops up on their list of targets to have a winter transfer window. The 24-year-old defender has one more season at Barca. But is already in discussions about a new contract. But, that hasn’t been very successful so far.
While, Barca has a very high opinion of him and has put an big €400m buyout clause in his contract. The club is open towards a move given the offer and timing is right.
Opportunity brewing for Blues in January
In case the talks for the renewal take long, the West London side might be inclined to make an official approach for Garcia in January. They will be testing Barca’s willingness to sell him. The €25m valuation appears to be fair for a player of Garcia’s age and experience. This is largely due to increasing want for calm defenders in the PL.
Tottenham now are considered to be in the mix, as they enquired about him during the summer. Head coach Enzo Maresca and his West London club seem more serious this time.
For now, Barca remain optimistic that Garcia will stay put under Barca head coach Hansi Flick. Yet in football, confidence can fade quickly when big clubs start circling with cash on the table.
Author’s Opinion:
Even if Eric Garcia is not one of the most entertaining players at Barca, he is a more advanced player and reliable, which will allow him to be a great addition. The West London club may need to act quickly. This would still be one of the more overlooked transfer activities in the winter window if they play it smart.
