Chelsea looking to sign Raphael Varane as a free agent

Thiago Silva has already announced his decesion about leaving Chelsea at the end of the season. The 39 year old defender arrived to London in 2020. Ever since his arrival Silva has been the main man and leader of defense. Surely there will a void left after the departure of Brazilian international. Chelsea are currently looking to sign Raphael Varane and make him Silva’s successor.

Raphael Varane currently plays for Manchester United. His contract will expire this summer and United have decided to not give him extension which makes him free agent. In his three year spell with red devils he has only managed to make 93 appearances across all competitions. The french international also was unlucky to have face injuries. Varane has already said fairwell to the fans and the Old Trafford.

“Its been an amazing few years to play for this special club and wear that shirt” – Raphael Varane on Instagram about playing for Manchester United.

United had one year extension option in the contract of the French international but have refused to do that. They believe its better to part ways for both parties making Varane free agent. Along with Chelsea, Varane also has some other clubs outside Premier League interested in him and will be in full control to take the decesion himself.

Chelsea will be looking to replace Thiago Silva with another experienced defender. Along with great defending, Silva possessed leading qualities making him main man at the back line. With the experience Varane has the blues will definately like to add him to their squad. It could prove a like for like replacement for the london side making them ready defensively for the next season.

How can Varane benefit Chelsea

Raphael Varane has a great experience and also played at the highest level of football. Before arriving at United, Varane was regular starter for Real Madrid. The French international has won the Champions league 4 times with Madrid. Varane also was a main player for France when the won World Cup in 2018. Varane was regular starter in 2022 World Cup too and also featured in final.

Departure of Thiago Silva will leave a void in defensive line which the blues will like to fill immediately. Varane could be the potential fit as his experience playing at top level could benefit the blues. Along with leadership, the french man can also help the youngsters in improving. Silva was 35 years old when Chelsea signed him from PSG. Many at time doubted Chelsea’s decesion for signing an old defender. However Silva proved his doubters wrong and also managed to win Champions league in his first season with blues. Chelsea could recreate this situation by signing Varane who is 31 years old.

Another reason why Chelsea will like to go after Varane is their current problems with finances. Todd Boehly have spent more than £1 billion ever since he took over. However the club has failed to show any profit causing problem for themselves. As a result Chelsea could not spend freely this summer and also may be parting ways with many of their players. They are also looking to sell homegrown players to achieve pure profit and get their books clean. Signing Varane on a free transfer could benefit them both ways. Along with getting a highly experienced defender it could also Chelsea help with their financial books.

Who else are in race for Varane

Along with Chelsea two other clubs are interested in signing Varane. Chelsea will have to race with Al-Nassr and Juventus for the French international according to The Hard Tackle. Al-Nassr are hoping to pair Varane with his former Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo. Juventus also are interested but may struggle with offering french defender the wages he deserves. This gives Chelsea and Al-Nassr an advantage and it will all come down to Varane’s decesion.
