Former Manchester United captain backs The Red Devils in approaching Aston Villa for prolific striker!

Aston Villa

Roy Keane is totally on board with the idea of Manchester United signing Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins. The 28-year old Englishman has been in fine form this season.

Watkins has managed 32 G/A in 36 Premier League games, bagging 19 goals for Aston Villa this season. He currently ranks 4th on the top scorer’s chart. The 28-year old is currently tied with Erling Haaland for most goal contributions in the league this season.

Watkins has been a crucial player for Villa propelling them to UEFA Champions League Qualification. With Tottenham’s loss to City on Tuesday, Villa sealed the 4th spot in the league table. Unai Emery’s Villa, with Ollie Watkins as talisman, have been in an impressive run of form.

Should Manchester United pursue Watkins?

Manchester United have only managed to score 52 goals in 36 games this season’s league. While finding the back of the net has been difficult for the Red Devils, conceding goals has been that easier. Manchester United have conceded 56 goals, holding a -4 goal difference!

Marcus Rashford has failed to live up to his hype having scored mere 8 goals this season. Rasmus Hojlund is the only forward in the team managing 10+ goals with a tally of 14. To make matters worse, Bruno Fernandes is the top scorer with 15 goals to his name, who is a midfielder! Therefore, bringing in a goalscoring option for The Red Devils seems likely.

Anthony Martial is injury prone and hence inconsistent. Martial is also expected to leave this summer after his contract expires. Rasmus Hojlund could use some backup. And what other alternative could be better than Ollie Watkins!

The Red Devils could be considering making a move for Watkins and provide some much needed competition to Hojlund. Roy Keane is unsurprisingly elated with Manchester United’s motive.

Watkins to United: A Possibility!

Manchester United are in a developing phase since the acquisition by INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe. United are undergoing various management changes. Several players will be moving in and out of the Old Trafford.

Jason Wilcox and Dan Ashworth will be joining The Red Devils as Technical and Sporting Directors respectively. Omar Berrada will be joining the duo soon. Casemiro could be leaving with offers from Saudi on the table. Raphael Varane has already confirmed that he will leave Old Trafford as a free agent at the end of the season.

Ollie Watkins to Manchester United could be a real possibility. However, pricing Watkins away from Villa’s hands won’t be easy. The 28-year old is enjoying the time of his life at Villa Park. Villa’s qualification for the Champions League makes the Englishman’s move more improbable. Especially, since Manchester United may miss out on playing in Europe the next season.

Needless to say, Unai Emery wouldn’t be pleased with the idea of Watkins leaving Villa Park. Aston Villa will try their best to retain Watkins. Given that, replacing the English International won’t be simple.

Roy Keane accredits Manchester United for Watkins!

Manchester United moving for Ollie Watkins has elated Roy Keane.

The former United captain assessed Watkins by stating:

“He could play for one of the top teams, couldn’t he? Villa are a top team but you’re talking about bigger clubs in Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City.

That’s a compliment to him, not that he has to leave Villa. But he’s capable of doing it. The kid is so sharp. He has a great shape to him.

His movement is as good as any striker in the Premier League. He’s having an amazing season.”

Will Manchester United be able to land Ollie Watkins is a mystery for now. However, a new adventure awaits The Red Devils for certain!
