Introduction: Liverpool signing a new LB
This summer, Liverpool had an important decision to make regarding left-back. Their long-term starter’s form had dropped off, age had started to creep in, and the backup was inconsistent. Many felt that something had to be done. A £40 million switch seemed to fit the bill perfectly.
Why a New Left-Back Was Needed
The injuries and pace started to catch up on him. Meanwhile, Kostas Tsimikas filled in often but never convincingly enough to take over permanently. Reports said left-back was one of the areas highlighted by Liverpool’s recruitment team as urgent to be strengthened.
Enter Milos Kerkez, a young, highly rated full-back from AFC Bournemouth. At just 21, he had already made his mark in the Premier League. Liverpool were reportedly ready to invest roughly £40 million for him. His profile matched what the Reds looked for: speed, attacking threat, room to grow. He seemed built for the modern left-back role in the club’s system.
Why It Was the Right Move for Liverpool
- future-proofing, with Robertson still valuable, his successor was younger, therefore meaning long-term stability.
- Tactical fit: Kerkez’s attacking flair means Liverpool can exploit width and overlaps with greater intent.
- Squad balance: Investment in left-back freed up Robertson-slot risk and gave competition, raising overall standard.
- Transfer timing: Liverpool acted before the price inflated, showing decisiveness in the market.
My Opinion
I think Liverpool has made a solid and necessary call here: left-back had become a weak link compared to the rest of the squad. Bringing in someone like Milos Kerkez for around £40 million made sense both for now and for the years ahead. If he fulfills his potential, this could be one of the smarter moves of the window. Of course, there’s risk with youth and adaptation, but the upside seems worth it.
