Manchester united could win a trophy despite a disappointing season

FA CUP

Although Manchester United did not have a great season overall, they still stand the chance of winning silverware. The Red Devils are in the FA Cup finals which will take place on 25th May at Wembley. Man United will face the Premier League title winners, Manchester City in the finals. Although the odds are in City’s favor, Manchester United cannot be underestimated. Erik Ten Hag’s side had a difficult campaign due to injury struggles. They finished eighth in the Premier League table, the lowest-ever finish they’ve had. The Red Devils won a crucial game with Liverpool and made it to the FA Cup semi-finals. Amad Diallo’s last-minute winner made the score 4-3 and put Man United through. Furthermore, they faced Coventry City and won the game during penalties. Erik ten Hag dealt with injury struggles throughout the season, however, some players may be available and return for the finals against City.

Erik Ten Hag’s squad had major injury struggles this season

Manchester United lost 14 games in the Premier League this season. Their backline had more than 30 combinations due to injury struggles. Most of their defenders were injured at some point or the other in the season. The three defenders whose absence was noticeable were Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof, and Luke Shaw. All three of them missed several games due to injuries. However, Martinez and Lindelof are available for the FA Cup finals. Unfortunately, Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire won’t be there due to injuries. Moreover, while speaking to reporters, United’s key defender, Diogo Dalot, said that he had to play matches even when he felt uncomfortable due to the injury crisis. However, Martinez and Lindelof’s return will be a huge boost to the squad. Moreover, Mason Mount could also be available against Man City.

What did Gary Neville say ahead of the FA Cup finals?

Considering Manchester United’s injury problems, Gary Neville spoke about how difficult it has been for Erik Ten Hag on the Stick to Football podcast. The football pundit said that Ten Hag might play Jonny Evans in the starting lineup against Man City. On the other hand, Jamie Carragher said that Martinez and Raphael Varane should start. However, Neville said that playing Martinez and Varane at the start could be risky. Manchester United have been disappointing this season, however, a trophy could change things around. Moreover, a win on Saturday will help Erik Ten Hag secure his job at Old Trafford

While speaking on the podcast, Neville said,

“I think it will be Jonny Evans and Martinez. I can’t think he will play Varane and Martinez, both of them having not played, that’s a massive risk.”

Although it will be a relief to see Casemiro back in his position, it is a risk for their back line considering Martinez and Varane haven’t played much recently. However, Ten Hag will have to trust their partnership if he is unsure about Jonny Evans starting. Additionally, the Red Devils will focus on getting defenders in the upcoming transfer window. The hunt for center-backs has already begun. Moreover, Everton’s defender, Jarrad Branthwaite is on Manchester United’s radar.
