Schmeichel slams United’s call to sell Scott McTominay

Manchester United

Peter Schmeichel is baffled by Manchester United’s choice to sell Scott McTominay, he feels was made for Old Trafford.

Schmeichel impressed by McTominay

Peter Schmeichel can’t wrap his head around Man United’s decision to part ways with Scott McTominay. That is especially after the Scot’s electric form for Napoli.

Since moving to Italy for just £25m, McTominay has been a revelation. His performance earned him a mention on a Ballon d’Or list as well. That is a feat few saw coming when he left Old Trafford.

Schmeichel remains firm on the fact that the traits of the player were meant for the character of Man Utd. The Dane has gone as far as to label the player “so much Manchester United.” He thinks that the team has lost a player who actually personified its character.

Utd’s financial struggles clouded judgment

Man Utd’s ongoing Financial Fair Play issues forced some tough decisions under Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s cost-cutting regime. Staff layoffs and player sales became routine. But, the former Man Utd keeper believes the club’s focus on balance sheets over footballing sense led to poor calls.

McTominay himself admitted he left partly because of FFP pressure. While the player has flourished in Naples, Man Utd fans are left wondering how such a key performer slipped through their fingers. For Schmeichel, this isn’t just about losing a midfielder, it’s about losing the kind of mentality the club desperately needs at the moment.

Author’s Opinion:

Peter Schmeichel’s frustration is justified. In the process of trying to mend their financial situation, Man Utd might have done away with the spirit and the flesh of their team on the field. It must hurt to see Scott McTominay shine in another place. It should be like a red flag for the people at Old Trafford who make the decisions.
