SLC (Sri Lanka Cricket) declares halt of all board-run domestic contests.

SRI LANKA CRICKET(SLC) ANNOUNCEMENT

The Sri Lanka Cricket SLC announces the suspension of all board-run domestic games. The decision got announced on September 2nd, Saturday. As per the reports, the halt is due to debate over the reshuffling of the domestic tournaments. Therefore, the halt on the domestic games is a consequence of the dispute and objections from the domestic team.

In 2021, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) started to reconstruct their domestic contests. SLC shifted from a two-tire system and opted for two groups of 13 teams each.

In the view of SLC, the 26 teams would contest in the three-day matches across the season. They had decided that the bottom two teams from each group would get eliminated for the first two years, and then three teams would encounter relegation in the third year. In the end, 15 teams will remain to compete in the top-tier domestic Sri Lankan matches.

However, The Board did not predict that the eliminated teams would not get any three-day matches to compete. Alternatively, they will take part in the Governor’s Trophy. The domestic will eventually complain about not getting time to play.

Looking at the complaints, the Board in June 2023 called for an emergency meeting. As per the discussions in the meeting, the initial two-tire system returned. Both of the contests began in June and July 2023. However, this decision didn’t go well with GCC.

SLC a media release stated

“Sri Lanka Cricket has decided to immediately halt all board-conducted domestic tournaments, this includes the ongoing Major Club 3-Day Tournament and also the Invitational Club Tier ‘B’ 3-Day Tournament. Accordingly, Sri Lanka Cricket is compelled to suspend all SLC-organised domestic cricket tournaments until clarification is obtained on the same”
