Transfer Tug of War: Liverpool battle for Lutsharel Geertruida

Premier league giants Liverpool and Arsenal are keen to improve their right-back position by signing Dutch defender Lutsharel Geertruida. Last season, the defender was crucial for new Liverpool manager Arne Slot at Feyenoord. He scored 8 goals and provided 5 assists, also kept 15 cleansheets in 34 apps for his club. Slot wants his former apprentice at his new club to fill the role of a vacant backup right-back. Liverpool struggled when Trent’s injury forced them to play Joe Gomez out of position as a right-back which costed them crucial points. The Gunners also want him as Tomiyasu currently plays as a leftback and Ben White needs a strong backup. Arsenal have finished second twice in a row, therefore they want to loaded with firepower next season. The youngster’s versatility allows him to play as a centreback and a leftback making him a target for big clubs across Europe.

Slot in dilemma to bring Lutsharel Geertruida at Liverpool

Arne Slot is in a dilemma of whether to sign Lutsharel Geertruida at Liverpool or not. Eredivise players are known to struggle at the English soil. Slot rates Geertruida highly and will love to coach him again but he does not want to repeat Ten Hag’s mistake of bringing players from his former club and failing to make them perform at the highest level. Man United fans deemed Antony the next Ryan Giggs after his spell at Ajax but he failed to deliver. The Dutch manager has reportedly disapproved the deal being uncertain about the player’s ability to adapt in new conditions. Slot must decide quickly or they will lose ground to other clubs interested in the 23-year old. The Feyenoord defender seeks a new challenge and wants his next destination to be Premier league club. Sources say, he dreams of playing in the Premier league and win it someday.

The Dutchman is reportedly worth around £25m. If other clubs engage to sign the defender, bids could cross £60m-70m quite easily. Plenty of clubs are having the same doubts regarding Lutsharel Geertruida as Liverpool. Clubs have faced backlash for spending excessive money on players who have failed to live expectations. Managers want to take time with him, and will probably go for him if he continues at the same level 2-3 years later. Although there are some clubs who are keen on getting the youngster taking a bold risk in case Liverpool or Arsenal back out from the race. PSG have shown interest in him but they need to sell some of their players in order to get him. Tottenham Hotspurs have also scouted the defender and is on their radar.

Spurs to hijack Geertruida!

If the latest reports are to be believed, Tottenham Hotspur are now the favourites to sign Lutsharel Geertruida over Liverpool and Arsenal. They have appeared out of nowhere and are plotting to hijack the deal from their arch rivals Arsenal and Liverpool. They have been scouting the defender extensively last season and are confident of luring him to the white part of North London. Bundesliga side RB Leipzig reached out to Feyenoord for the Dutchman but their offer was rejected. Tottenham keen on signing Geertruida before July as their pre season friendlies begin from July 17th prompting the urgency.

Agreeing on personal terms will not be a problem for Tottenham as the player is keen on a move to England. However, he will come at a high price because Feyenoord typically maintain a rigid stance during negotiations. The 16 time Eridivise winners will not make it easy for the Premier league club. Chief football writer for Sunday Mirror issued an update. He says;

Tottenham Hotspur are in pole position to land Feyenoord defender Lutsharel Geertruida.Liverpool’s reluctance to make the deal happen quickly has opened door for Spurs, who watched Geertruida regularly last season and are hoping he opts for them ahead of PSG.
