Cole Palmer is goalless in seven consecutive Chelsea games after failing to score in their 4-0 win over Southampton.
Chelsea and Cole Palmer trying to get back in the top four race
Cole has been among the Premier League’s top players. Since moving sides, his performance has been at its peak. His market value rose from €18 million to €130 million as a result.
But his and his team’s performance has dropped since the new year. He has failed to score or score in any of his last seven games so far. From the midfield, he is the key player who makes things happen. However, since mid-December, Chelsea has dropped from second to seventh place. The star boy’s performances matched the club’s terrible results. He was the one who made magic for them, but he needs aid.
In the summer of 2023, the England international moved from Manchester City to the Blues. He was bought for around €47 million. Few people expected the impact he has made. In all competitions, he only played 1,483 minutes for Pep Guardiola. Some wondered if the Blues had spent too much on a player who had very little senior-level experience.
Chelsea fans are behind their Starboy, Cole Palmer
The problem is that supporters in west London have grown used to watching the 22-year-old Englishman do feats on the field. Since he began playing for them, he has done that on every matchday. When few were counting on his team, he led them to their peak performance. At the Stamford Bridge, this resulted in an over dependence on Cole. However, he is currently having difficulties, which is causing his club to struggle as well.
However, he always gave his best effort from the very start. He simply hasn’t made as big of an impact this year as he typically does. He can still have a strong season-ending record.
Enzo Maresca claimed that he is not at all worried about Palmer’s form. The youngster has failed to score in his last seven games so far. The manager also feels that his team needs to stop relying on a single player so much. The side is seventh in the Premier League currently.
The Blues have been at the top of their game since the start of the season. But since December, they have seen a decline in form. They only have four wins in their last 13 matches in all competitions.
The head coach has full confidence in his player
The Chelsea Boss was asked about tough times ahead of their meeting with Southampton, he said: “No, I am not concerned about him.
“I am always concerned about general performances, but not Cole because Cole is a human being and always during a season he can have some moments where he struggles a little bit more.
“Every game we expect a goal or an assist, but it is difficult. In this moment, his performance reflects the team’s, that he struggles to score goals. We need to be more clinical when we get chances.
“Cole is just frustrated that we are not winning games. It is nothing more than that.”
Maresca on if the midfielder is frustrated with his teammates: “The problem with Cole is we rely on Cole for everything,” the Chelsea boss added.
“I have said since the start we need to rely on the team for everything.
“For sure, there are top players like Cole, but we are not worried about Cole at all.”
Author’s Opinion
It is definitely very tough to see one of the best players of the campaign struggle for form. The London side was once fighting for the Premier League title. And now they’re trying so hard to qualify for the Champions League.
Although, Palmer seems confident in rediscovering himself. He broke his silence and sent a message to the Chelsea fans after their game against Southampton. He took to Instagram and wrote: “well done lads +3, don’t worry I will be back”
