Manchester City are trying to make a move for Newcastle’s midfielder

Newcastle United

Manchester City won their fourth consecutive Premier League title last week and are looking forward to strengthening their squad further. The Blues have already added a few players on their list of targets for the upcoming transfer window. The Man City manager, Pep Guardiola, wants the club to spend money on Newcastle’s midfielder, Bruno Guimaraes. The Brazilian footballer was exceptional this season. He scored 7 goals and provided 8 assists in 37 appearances in the Premier League. Moreover, Guimaraes’ contract with Newcastle is ending next month. However, the Newcastle manager, Eddie Howe said that the Brazilian’s release clause of £100 million is only till June 30th. Therefore, the clubs interested in signing him will have to be prompt with their decision and send a bid accordingly.

Manchester City have competitors to sign Bruno Guimaraes

Along with Manchester City, their Premier League rivals, Arsenal, have also shown interest in the midfielder. Arsenal have been keeping an eye on the Brazilian since a while and are looking forward to signing him this summer. Additionally, the Ligue 1 club, Paris Saint-Germain want to sign Guimaraes. However, they will have to focus on getting a replacement for Kylian Mbappe as soon as the window opens. On the other hand, Man City were keen on signing Lucas Paqueta from West Ham but he is undergoing investigation at the moment for suspicious betting activities. If Paqueta is found guilty, he could face a lengthy ban. However, Paqueta denied the charges and said that he will fight to clear his name. But incase the Brazilian faces a ban, he will miss out on the Copa America as well.

What did Eddie Howe say about Bruno Guimaraes’ future at Newcastle?

Bruno Guimaraes has been an important player for the Magpies this season. Newcastle will surely want to keep him, however, selling him will gain them a huge profit. The club are also looking to sell players to stay out from breaching the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR). Additionally, Newcastle’s boss, Eddie Howe, was happy with the Brazilian’s performance and said that he would want him in the squad next season. However, the manager also said that he’s not worried about Guimaraes moving because he has no control over it.

While speaking about Guimaraes’ clause in April, Eddie Howe said,

“I think, it goes without saying, my thoughts on Bruno’s situation are that we want to keep him, we want to build our team around him. He’s an integral part of what we are doing.”

The Newcastle manager further mentioned,

“I think his form has been very good. He seems very happy and settled. He will be thinking about, of course, a busy summer ahead and where hopefully we can take the team with him as a big part of it. But, as I say, we are not in control of it, so let’s see.”

Although the Magpies want the Brazilian to continue his stay at St. James’ Park, they do not have control because of the release clause. Thus, the ultimate decision lies in the player’s hands if he wants to stay or leave. Furthermore, the Magpies missed out on a European spot this season after Manchester United filled the Europa League spot by winning the FA Cup. However, Newcastle will focus on the next season and try to make the best use of the summer transfer window.
