Tottenham Hotspur were close to getting a top-four spot in the Premier League last season, however, Aston Villa jumped ahead. The Lilywhites finished fifth with 66 points. Spurs’ season was off to a great start but unfortunately, they had a downfall in their last few games. They lost three of their last five games which caused them to drop to fifth place. Although the club easily made it to a spot in the Europa League, it was disappointing to miss out on a Champions League spot after coming so far. Moreover, the Tottenham stars including Heung-Min Son, Richarlison, and James Maddison also enjoyed the campaign individually. However, the club are keen on signing another forward this summer. The Lilywhites are interested in signing Feyenoord’s striker, Santiago Gimenez.
The Feyenoord forward could be beneficial for Tottenham’s attack
According to reports, Santiago Gimenez is close to signing a deal with the Lilywhites despite getting interest from other clubs. The 23-year-old’s performance in the recently concluded season attracted several clubs including Atletico Madrid. However, a move to the Spanish club doesn’t seem idea. Gimenez scored 23 goals and gave 5 assists in 30 Eredivisie games. It will be exciting to see him play alongside James Maddison. It will also increase the competition for Heung-Min Son and Richarlison for a starting spot. Postecoglou will also benefit from another attacking option in the squad if the deal falls into place. The Tottenham manager is eager to help the Lilywhites evolve into something better.
While speaking about his squad, Postecoglou said,
“It’s inevitable at the start that most of it is happening because you’re telling them to do it, so at least I’m making an impact, at least they’re listening to me, that’s one box ticked.”
“But for it to truly evolve into something, it’s because the players believe it. And I’ve seen the players growing into it, but we’re not there yet.”
-added the Tottenham manager.
The striker is currently representing Mexico on the international stage at the Copa America. It could be a great signing for Spurs if they manage to get the striker this summer.
Gimenez and Maddison could pose a threatening attack together
Although Son and Richarlison did well in the previously ended season, the Lilywhites feel it is necessary to add another attacking option to their squad. Gimenez’s 26-goal haul in 41 games across all competitions is better than that of Dejan Kulusevski’s, Richarlison, and Brennan Johnson’s all together. Moreover, his goal contribution could help Maddison shoot up his assist numbers. Gimenez’s move to the Premier League could be massive for Postecoglou’s side. Additionally, it was recently revealed that Arne Slot was discussing about the Mexican striker with his Liverpool staff. Slot worked with Gimenez previously at Feyenoord and it was believed that the 23-year-old would follow the manager to Anfield. However, Tottenham are way ahead in the race for the striker.
