It is reported that Newcastle have closed in on Hugo Ekitike as they have agreed to the asked fee. According to Foot Mercato, the fee is said to be up to £40million for the Reims striker. Magpies fans were doubtful whether they could ever see Ekitike play for their club. However, it is known that Newcastle agreed on the fee in the January transfer window.

The teenager, however, had decided to stay put on his transfer. This week Reims President Jean-Pierre Caillot admitted to the Magpies keeping contact with the player for a possible move.

Therefore, now it seems that Newcastle are very close to signing the 19-year-old. However, as specified earlier Foot Mercato has reported that Newcastle have agreed on a fee for Ekitike. It is said that they could pay £30.7million which could rise up to £40million. The report even states that the final intricate details need to be finalized now. Therefore, it now seems that Ekitike coming to St. James Park is now a matter of time.

How important could be Ekitike to Newcastle?

It is now very clear that Newcastle would sign the teenager this summer. However, it is known that Newcastle was ready to pay the said fee back in January.

During that time their Premier League status was not confirmed for the next season. Therefore, in order to boost their chances of a top-half finish coming summer, they have quickly moved for the player.

He has also been described as a ‘very special’ striker. This season he scored 10 goals. These statistics would be impressive when I mention that he only made 15 appearances overall. Nine of them came from the bench.

There is real excitement on hold in the coming weeks for the Magpies’ fans. It now seems that Newcastle could only provide Ekitike the chance to play in the Premier League.
