The reason behind the stalled Ferrari F1 development revealed

Ferrari 2023

In the later stages, the development pace of Ferrari slowed down incredibly in comparison to the rival F1 teams.

Ferrari kicked off the 2022 F1 season with a bang. After a couple of years of developing a competitive enough car, Ferrari finally managed to put up a car worthy enough for a title fight.

However, the 2022 campaign turned out to be rather disastrous for Ferrari. Even after securing P2 in both championships, it was a story of disappointment and failure.

Regardless, the Scuderia was outpaced by its rivals mainly red bull and Mercedes on the all-season development. Many wondered why Ferrari failed to upgrade the car to remain competitive. Now, the departing team principal of Ferrari, Mattia Binotto has revealed the reason behind the stalled upgrades:

“We simply finished the money for the budget cap.

“So we were simply at the cap and had no more opportunity of developing the car, so we simply stuck where we were.”

After some adjustments to the budget reflecting the increased energy and freight costs, this year’s budget was fixed at $144 million.

Binotto was asked if reaching the budget limit mid-season affected the 2023 car development. The ex-Ferrari boss denied the speculation:

“It didn’t.

“We didn’t compromise next year’s car development but certainly, we decided to stop the current one because, on top of this normal development on the current one, you would have needed to produce the parts and bring them to the track.”

“That was the extra cost that we couldn’t afford.”
