After Virat Kohli suddenly decided to step down as India’s Test captain, Rohit Sharma, India’s white-ball captain was left “shocked” by this decision.

Kohli’s other teammates gave generous wishes to him on Twitter and praised him as the captain who took the Test team to new heights, giving them a first-ever series win in Australia.

Ravi Shastri also grew sad by Kohli’s decision and termed it a “sad day” as this was the team they had “built together”.

R Ashwin remarked that Kohli had left a “headache” for his successor with the high standards that he had set. Ishant reminisced his days with Kohli by going through their childhood days.

Other cricketers such as Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav also expressed their heartfelt wishes for Kohli and termed how lucky they were to play under him.

Tweets from players and former head coach

Anushka Sharma wrote a heartwarming message for her husband on Instagram and recalled his journey from becoming the captain in 2014 and concluding it with the ongoing South Africa tour.

Rohit Sharma wrote on his Instagram page,

Shocked!! But congratulations on a successful stint as captain. Many, many best wishes for the future.

Sourav Ganguly, BCCI President, with whom Kohli had a bit of contradiction recently, also praised the latter and said that Kohli will remain an indispensable part of the team and will continue to contribute with the bat for the team.

I personally thank Virat for his immense contributions as captain of the Indian cricket team. Under his leadership, the Indian cricket team has made rapid strides in all formats of the game. His decision is a personal one and the BCCI respects it immensely. He wil continue to be a very important member of this team and take this team to newer heights with his contributions with the bat under a new captain. Every good thing comes to an end and this has been a very good one.

Kohli was just 26 when he took over the Test captaincy from MS Dhoni in 2014. Anushka recalls Kohli breaking down with a varying amount of emotions and she was always beside him. She also remembered how Kohli has grown in the past 7 years as a player, captain, and human being.
