After more than five years in the club, Laia Codina decides to leave FC Barcelona in favour of Arsenal. The decision was quite shocking to both the fans and the team.
The young defender has gained much renown and respect from her teammates. A feeling, and a bond, that is mutual. Moreover, Codina’s contract is yet to expire until 30 June 2024.
Despite the emotional and legal bonds however, Barcelona’s management were supportive of Codina’s decision.
Why Laia Codina chose Arsenal over Barcelona
Codina’s reasons to leave FC Barcelona are quite clear. Having proven her talent during the World Cup semi-final between Spain and Sweden, it becomes apparent that the young defender’s potential is underutilized by Barça.
Indeed, in a total of four seasons in the Liga F, the defender participated in a total of 29 games. The number is rather insignificant when compared to some of the notable players in the club such as Caroline Hansen and Ana-Maria Crnogorčević, both playing for four seasons as well. In fact, Laia Codina has the lowest number of matches played among all squad members participating for more than three seasons.
The attraction of Arsenal and the English league as a whole is another important variable.
Arsenal has solidified it’s status as a top tier club. One with not only quality, but consistency as well. Additionally, The club came third in the Women’s Super League (WSL) last season.
the Gunners have also shown great interest in Laia Codina. As Laura Wienroither will supposedly not participate next season due to her ACL injury, Codina seems to be Arsenal’s prime candidate to fill her position.
In brief, the Gunners’ needs and Codina’s wants seem to hint at a possibly bright future for the young player. One where talent will be given a chance to shine.
