Liverpool were in a rumor to consider appointing Brighton & Hove Albion’s Roberto De Zerbi. However, Mark Goldbridge believes Liverpool made a wise decision to avoid him following their recent match against Manchester City.
Reports suggest that Liverpool have selected Arne Slot as their next manager. The Dutchman expressed his desire earlier this week to move to Anfield and succeed Jurgen Klopp. Klopp’s nine-year tenure is on its way to conclude in the summer.
The journey has seen Xabi Alonso and Ruben Amorim linked with the Reds’ manager position, though deals for them never materialized. At one point, Jamie Carragher suggested De Zerbi for the role. However, following his team’s 4-0 defeat to City, De Zerbi faced criticism from Goldbridge, revealing his true sentiments towards the Italian.

De Zerbi continues to receive praise for his style of play, characterized by baiting the press and playing short, passing football from the heart of his defense, followed by swift counter-attacks. However, this approach can sometimes backfire, as illustrated by Phil Foden’s goal, which extended City’s lead to 3-0.

Given Liverpool’s technical style, De Zerbi might have wanted his players to adopt a similar approach had he taken over at Anfield. However, against top teams, such tactics can leave a team vulnerable, potentially leading to struggles for Liverpool next season.
Brighton & Hove Albion are currently experiencing a dip in form, having gone winless in their last five top-flight matches. Since the start of the year, they have only managed three league victories, including a derby win against Crystal Palace. As well as victories against bottom side Sheffield United and a struggling Nottingham Forest side.
Recognized for prioritizing youth development, Brighton may find themselves somewhat naive under De Zerbi’s guidance due to their young squad. He is undoubtedly a top modern coach with progressive ideas. However, their passive performance against City in a crucial match at the top of the division has raised concerns about whether his stubbornness could impact his future in the long run.
