A delightful news comes in the way of Manchester City as their star player, Bernardo Silva has decided to stay at the club. Silva extended his contract with City, signing a new six-year deal, till 2030, despite rumours of an exit this summer. Manchester City published an official statement yesterday, confirming Silva’s contract extension.
Bernardo Silva was rumoured to leave the club since the last summer. Reportedly, a few clubs had made offers for the midfielder last season, but City had no intentions of selling their star man. Even this summer, multiple clubs had shown interest in Silva. Saudi club Al-Hilal and FC Barcelona were the two clubs, who were strongly linked to Silva this summer. Bernardo didn’t even consider the ‘mega‘ offer from Al-Hilal because of his desire to continue playing in Europe. Therefore, a move to Barcelona seemed ‘quite likely‘ at one point of time. However, the delay in any official moves from Barça, gave Silva enough time to make his descision of extending his stay at City.

After signing the new deal, Bernardo Silva expressed his happiness of deciding to stay with the club. In his first interview with Man City after completing the deal, Silva said: “I’ve had six incredible years at Manchester City and I’m delighted to extend my time here. Winning the Treble last season was extremely special. It’s exciting to be part of a squad where there is such a hunger and passion. I love the manager, my team-mates and the fans. I hope we can share even more great memories in the coming years.”
Manchester City’s director of football also expressed his delight over Bernardo’s new deal. Txiki Begiristain said: “Bernardo has been exceptional during his time at the Etihad. So we’re delighted that he has signed a contract extension with the club. His quality and technical ability is fantastic. And alongside his hard work and professionalism, he has become one of the best players in the world.”
Bernardo Silva has won 14 trophies with City so far, including the magnificent treble that they won last season. Apart from the team trophies, Silva was named in the PFA Team of the Year in 2018/19 and 2021/22 and the Champions League Team of the Season in 2022/23.
It comes as a no-brainer that all of Man City would be glad to see Bernardo continue with them. The qualities that he possesses as a player, makes him one of the most important players in the City squad. Signed in 2017 as replacement for the legendary David Silva, Bernardo has really managed to make a name for himself. Since his debut, he has been a lethal weapon for Pep Guardiola. In all the success that City and Pep have enjoyed in recent years, Bernardo has been a crucial part of it.
