Pundit Jamie Carragher gives insight why Arsenal didn’t sign James Maddinson this summer as the midfielder is in red hot form currently

The Three Lions midfielder joined Tottenham Hotspur this summer for £40 million. He left Leicester City after club got relegated from Premier League last season.

However, after joining his new club, Maddinson is in brilliant form as he won August Player of the Month Award. Many English club are now kicking themselves for signing him this summer.

Arsenal was also interested in signing Maddinson this summer but they failed secure his signature. Gunners main focus was on Declan Rice in the last transfer window.

However, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher points out why Arsenal and other English didn’t opt for Maddinson this summer.

Writing for The Telegraph, Carragher gave reasons why a manager like Mikel Arteta wouldn’t sign a classic No.10 like Maddison. He quote :-

“His style extends to his on-field role. With the utmost respect to Maddison and Spurs, it explains why his options during the summer did not include Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool.

“I have no doubt all watched him for Leicester and at some point over the last three years considered signing him. The reason they said no is because Maddison’s most effective position is unfashionable for elite coaches.”

However, Arsenal already have Martin Odegaard is their ranks. Club supporters have appreciated every moment of the Norwegian midfielder since he joined the club.

Maddinson is currently enjoying his time at his new club as Tottenham will look to change their fortune this season.
