Chelsea: Kepa Arrizabalaga to be canned?

Kepa Arrizabalaga is unlikely to continue at Chelsea. Owing to poor performances, Kepa’s spot in the team is in jeopardy. Moreover, Edouard Mendy has taken the role of first-choice keeper since he was brought in.

Chelsea faced Crystal Palace on Sunday, April 17 in the FA cup semi-finals. Chelsea won 2-0 thanks to Mason Mount and Ruben Loftus-Cheek. The talking point of the match however was Tuchel playing Mendy over Kepa. Kepa was always the first name on the team sheet in the cup runs. However, Tuchel choosing Mendy at this stage could mean Chelsea no longer requires the service of the Spaniard.

Kepa joined Chelsea in August 2018 as the costliest GK of all time. Bought at a price of 72m, he still remains the costliest GK of all time. He was brought in to replace Thibaut Courtois who moved to Real Madrid that summer. However, he hasn’t managed to be the wall that Courtois was. He has been poor for Chelsea barring a handful of performances.

A string of poor performances made Chelsea sign a new GK in the form of Edouard Mendy. Mendy has been the first choice keeper and has displayed tremendous shot-stopping ability and has kept several clean sheets. Something which Kepa failed to do. Tuchel preferring Mendy in the FA cup seems to be the final nail in the coffin for Kepa. It seems like Kepa’s time at Chelsea is over.

Where should Kepa move to?

Kepa should probably make a move towards Italy. Seria A is known for their hardcore defense and Kepa will have an easier life compared to Chelsea. With incoming reports claiming Juventus is interested in the Spaniard, Chelsea would be more than happy to offload the goalkeeper. Moreover, Kepa will have a lot less to do at Juventus where they have the likes of Chiellini, Bonucci, and De Ligt.
