Franz Tost Germany

It was revealed that the Chinese GP will not take place in 2023 due to the country’s strict COVID policies.

The first Chinese Grand Prix which was held in 2004 marked the start of a new partnership in Formula 1. Since then, the Chinese GP has been a part of the F1 calendar until 2019.

The race was dropped from the 2020 calendar due to the COVID-19 situation in the country. The virus led to the cancellation of multiple races during the 2020 season. The Grand Prix hasn’t made a return since then.

Now, the return of the Chinese GP was all set for 2023. However, due to the country’s strict COVID policies, it again became difficult. The race was ultimately dropped yet again citing “difficulties presented by the Covid-19 situation” in the country.

However, since the announcement, China has rapidly worked on rolling down many of its strict protocols and restrictions due to COVID-19. It is now also revealed that the country is set to remove all quarantine restrictions for International arrivals from 8th January 2023.

Other sports in China have also seen relief. Recently, the Chinese Basketball Association accompanied by the Chinese Super League opened the stadiums for the fans. It was the first time after playing in closed arenas for over two years.

Keeping this and the relaxing restrictions, Juss Sports who is the promoter of the Chinese GP has also taken steps. Reports indicate that the promoter has put forward a proposal to conduct the Chinese GP on its original intended date which is 16th April 2023.
