Dominic Thiem took a year to reach another tour semifinal

Former Grand Slam champion Dominic Thiem showed a huge drop in his form after winning the US Open 2020. But finally, the 29-year-old reached his first ATP semifinal since Madrid Masters in 2021.

On Friday, Thiem defeated Juan Pablo Varillas 6-4,6-3 to enter the first semifinal after a year. He faced Matteo Berrettini in the semifinal in Gstaad Open where the Italian saw off Thiem 1-6,4-6.

The Austrian showed great performances shocking the critics who called him a one-time wonder. After Gstaad Open, the player would definitely be looking forward to performing better in the US Open.

“I played a good match yesterday and I was able to back it up today. Some things I didn’t like that much.”

“I failed to serve out at [5-2], but it was also the nerves a little bit because it is my first semi-final in one and a half years. I need the points to go back up the rankings. Seems happy as I was able to break the nerves.”

Thiem said in a post-match interview.

Though we all know that Thiem loves to surprise his supporters as well as his haters. Winning the US Open in 2020 after defeating Alexander Zverev by 2-6,4-6,6-4,6-3,7-6. Then withdrawing from several tournaments and Grand Slams due to the number of injuries he has had. Finally regaining the form back and outperforming his opponents in Gstaad Open.

It would be interesting to see how Dominic Thiem performs in his favorite slam which will start from 29th August.
