France manager Didier Deschamps unofficially ends the international career of West Ham United captain Kurt Zouma. The French defender is unable to make a place in the national team despite having a remarkable ongoing season. West Ham signed him for £29m from Chelsea when he was a starter from France. Though, he was quickly refrained from his national team’s federation following the now infamous cat kicking saga.

Deschamps told Sport Bible after the cat kicking incident,

I was very surprised by Kurt. This is something that is inadmissible, intolerable and cruelty without a name. I’m sure he became aware of it but these images are shocking and unbearable.

“I’m not a prosecutor. I am here to make selections on different criteria. It could have happened to me when players could have made mistakes not to select them for a while, so I will not change my way of doing things for the next list.”

Kurt Zouma has been a tower of strength and a popular figure among the West Ham fans. David Moyes has made him Declan Rice’s replacement as the club’s captain – quite the statement given everything that has gone on. However, it is not with the case of Deschamps. He now seems to have unofficially ended the defender’s career by not picking him despite many injuries. France will play against Holland and Scotland during the October international break.

While it would have been great for the player, Zouma will at least get spells of sustained rest rather than risk overdoing things at international level given his injury history.
