Gautam Gambhir says India is obsessed with Individual performances

tennis player

The former Indian opening batter Gautam Gambhir made a comment where he says that in India people are too obsessed with individuals rather than team performances. He says this while talking about India’s 2011 World Cup triumph. Gambhir makes the point that people do not give enough credit to the contribution of Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Zaheer Khan and other players. Rather, people only talk about the last six hit by than Indian skipper MS Dhoni.

In a chat on RevSportz, Gautam Gambhir said,

We haven’t credited Yuvraj enough for the 2011 World Cup. Even Zaheer Khan, Suresh Raina, and Munaf Patel. Sachin Tendulkar was the highest run scorer. But do we talk about that? Media keep talking about that one MS Dhoni six. You’re obsessed with individuals; you’ve forgotten team.”

This isn’t the first occasion Gautam Gambhir made such a remark. He blames it on the media for creating a culture where some individual players are treated more important than Indian Cricket team.

He further adds on,

It is not about the players. It’s the media it’s the social media. It’s narrative that has been created that you are obsessed with an individual so much that you forget about the team and what the team members have done. No individual can ever go on to win the World Cup. If that was the case India would have won every World Cup till now because we worship heroes. We worship our own players individually so much we start talking about them. We start treating them beyond a game of cricket”

Gambhir states this as one of major reason for India not winning any major ICC trophy in last 10 years.
