‘Good headache to have’:Ajit Agarkar on Kishan-KL Rahul selection debate

Indian chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced 15-men squad for the World Cup on 5th September. Yuzi Chahal and Sanju Samson misses out on the squad.

Agarkar said that KL Rahul’s is all fine. He has batted and kept wickets as well for 50 overs in a practice games. Rahul looks all set to make a comeback. He also gave insight about Shreyas Iyer and Jasprit Bumrah and said that team will look into their injuries going ahead. However, Kl Rahul is picked in the squad without playing any competitive game after the injury.

Talking to media, Ajit Agarkar said,

A lot of the guys picked themselves. There were some fitness issues, which we had to look into. All the three guys are okay. This squad gives us the best balance. Rahul has played a couple of games over the last two days (practice games),”

Talking about the selection debate between Kishan-Rahul. He said its a “good headache” to have.

Kishan played very well. We are happy to have two options, which will fight for a spot in the team. The coach and the captain will decide (who will play),”

Ajit Agarkar feels its a balanced squad

However, talking about the whole squad, chief selector thinks its a balanced squad. He feels this squad covers all basis. When asked about an off-spinner. Agarkar feels Kuldeep can do that job, as he takes the ball away from left-handers.

The skipper Rohit Sharma, talks about the players who couldn’t make the cut. Rohit shared his own experience of omission from 2011 World Cup.

Indian captain said,

“There will be some missing out and that happens every time. We can fit only 15 players. We looked at how to create a good balance and this is the best we could get,”

It’s good thing if people are fighting for their spots. It is challenging. We have to look at who is in form, what opposition is infront, who will benefit more; we look at all these factors and decide upon the team for matches. This happens in Cricket, we have to make tough calls. What is good for us on a given day, we do that.”

The marquee event begins from 5th October. However, team India will open their campaign against Australia on 8th October, in Chennai.
