“It felt like a heavyweight fight” – Horner on last year’s title fight

Christian Horner felt frustrated during the fight with Mercedes last year in 2021 which ultimately saw Max Verstappen winning the title.

Max Verstappen won his first World Championship fighting a long, controversial, and heated season with Lewis Hamilton in 2021.

Off the track, Red Bull boss Christian Horner and his Mercedes counterpart Toto Wolff engaged in a lot of heated battle with words.

Nevertheless, with Mercedes out of the front this year. The battle between Red Bull and Ferrari has been much calmer and quieter in comparison to last year.

“It’s very different,”

Horner said.

“It’s about what’s going on on-track rather than off-track. That’s refreshing.

“It’s always great to be racing Ferrari. They’re an iconic brand, an iconic team.

“I think that the racing between Charles [Leclerc] and Max so far has been outstanding, and it’s been close and hard, but fair.”

On asked, if he liked and still remember the Mercedes battle from last year, Horner replied:

“Not really,

“It was frustrating that there was an awful lot going on behind the scenes. And of course, as we were establishing new power trains business as well. That only heightened the tension.

“It felt like a heavyweight fight obviously last year throughout.

“Mercedes hadn’t been challenged previously, they’d never been beaten in eight years and they obviously didn’t like it.

“It was a tough season, it was a gruelling season. But it just demonstrates that anything in life is possible if you apply yourself and you want it bad enough.”

Obviously, this season has been much cleaner and calm between Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc. But, who knows if Ferrari had not screwed up strategies. Leclerc might have been closer to Verstappen, then the two might be fighting harder and more fiercely.

Just like the last season was. It was never really one-sided. Till the very last race, it was anybody’s game.
