Jamie Carragher claims that Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk has been underrated this season. Virgil had a pretty disappointing performance last season. Consequently, everyone thought that the 32-year old has passed his prime. Though, he is looking to have rejuvenated this campaign so far. After getting the captain’s armband from Jordan Henderson, the Dutchman is looking very attentive towards his roles. Jamie Carragher, writing in his column for The Telegraph, said,

“For Liverpool to be title challengers this season, Virgil van Dijk must re-establish himself as the team’s figurehead.”

“The reassuring news for Jurgen Klopp is he is doing so. Apart from a bad afternoon against Newcastle United, Van Dijk’s form has been an overlooked feature of Liverpool’s encouraging start.

“It has been a timely response because, for the first time in his Anfield career, Van Dijk has to silence doubters.

“By his standards, the last 12 months were poor. But we should not forget how extraordinarily high those standards are.”

Apart from the red card against Newcastle United, Virgil has been a solid figure at the heart of the backline for the Reds. Last season, the 32-year old Dutch international seemed to be very uninterested and reckless in his job. However, this season he is looking to have overcome those shortcomings and leading from the front. Though, he has been a bit short of pace after his injury back in 2020. Other than that, he is looking close to that 2019/20 season. Moreover, he has only missed 12 out of 84 Premier League games since his return. Though, two of them have been suspensions. Liverpool fans will hope the Big Virg to continue his form and get them silverware as the captain.
