Jurgen Klopp

Jurgen Klopp has added his voice to the growing chorus of football figures questioning the effectiveness of the VAR system. In light of a controversial decision during Arsenal‘s recent defeat to West Ham United, Klopp expressed concerns about VAR’s accuracy. Speaking candidly ahead of Liverpool‘s New Year’s Day match against Newcastle United, he called for improvements in VAR’s implementation.

Jurgen Klopp’s response to the VAR controversy highlights ongoing concerns about the system’s effectiveness in football. While not advocating for VAR’s removal, Klopp calls for its better utilization.

Klopp’s Fiery Response to VAR Controversy

Jurgen Klopp spoke bluntly about VAR at his pre-match press conference. Moreover, he addressed whether VAR serves its intended purpose. The controversy in question emerged from Arsenal’s loss to West Ham. It revolved around Tomas Soucek‘s goal and the debate over Jarrod Bowen keeping the ball in play before the crucial pass.

Klopp passionately responded to the VAR controversy. He hesitated to answer the question, saying,

“I really don’t think that I should answer this question.”

The Liverpool manager felt that people had overused his previous statements on VAR. Moreover, he questioned the system’s effectiveness, mirroring the frustrations of many fans and pundits with its inconsistencies

Klopp highlighted that VAR’s issues are well-known and visible to football fans and experts. He expressed frustration, saying,

“What I say now is ‘Klopp says,’ and the problem we all see, every day pretty much, whenever we watch a game we say ‘How is that possible?’. We know the issues already. The authorities probably do too.”

Klopp Advocates for Improved VAR Usage

Despite his frustrations, Klopp did not call for VAR’s complete removal from the game. Moreover, he stressed the need for better use of technology. Furthermore, he suggested that enhancing VAR could address its current shortcomings.

Klopp clarified that he doesn’t support removing VAR entirely. Moreover, he argued for its more effective use. He stated,

“Oh my god! Take VAR away? No. Use VAR better is probably the right thing. I think it could be done.”

Nevertheless, Klopp’s view aligns with those who see technology as valuable in officiating if used correctly.

Arsenal’s defeat to West Ham not only raised VAR concerns but also affected the Premier League title race. Moreover, the loss prevented Arsenal from overtaking Liverpool at the top of the table. Klopp seized this opportunity to emphasize Diogo Jota‘s importance following his return from injury. Thus highlighting Liverpool’s need for special players like Jota for high-level competition.
