Liverpool ends their Europa League with a tough night in Brussels

Liverpool

Liverpool concluded their Europa League group stage with a 2-1 defeat against Union Saint-Gilloise in Brussels. They played a much-changed lineup dominated by youthful faces. Despite the loss, the Reds had already secured their place in the last 16 before the match. This allowed Jurgen Klopp to rest key players and provide opportunities to rising talents like Ben Doak, Kaide Gordon, Luke Chambers, and Conor Bradley.

However, the reported positions published by UEFA ahead of the game created confusion and humor. The lineup depicted curious tactical placements. It indicated Harvey Elliott in midfield alongside Kaide Gordon and defensive midfielder Wataru Endo leading the attack. Furthermore, center-back Jarell Quansah was seemingly deployed as an adventurous No. 10.

Although Bradley showcased his scoring abilities with an equalizer, it’s unlikely Klopp will employ him in an attacking role regularly. Amid Andy Robertson’s absence, Liverpool’s reliance on Kostas Tsimikas has been evident. But, the suggestion of Cody Gakpo filling in at left-back by UEFA appeared far-fetched given his usual position as forward.

Captaincy fell to Curtis Jones. It was a proud moment for the 22-year-old, who led the Reds in Europe for the first time. However, a comical incident with the coin toss, conducted with a colored disc instead of a coin, hinted at a disjointed night for Liverpool as the outcome landed against Jones’ choice.

Liverpool’s Kaide Gordon returns from injury

The game marked Kaide Gordon’s return after a 23-month absence due to injury, receiving advice from experienced teammate Harvey Elliott. Elliott’s mentorship to the 19-year-old demonstrates his growing maturity and responsibility within the squad.

For Cody Gakpo, the evening was forgettable, marred by a controversial moment when he lost a boot during a dribble, yet no foul was given despite his clear disadvantage. The sight of Gakpo attempting to retrieve his lost boot amid ongoing play encapsulated a disappointing outing for the Reds.

Liverpool’s Europa League journey might have ended on a challenging note, but it provided valuable experience for the younger talents, emphasizing the team’s depth and the learning curve for emerging stars.
