Liverpool: Reds Set to Bid for Romeo Lavia

Liverpool

Liverpool is reportedly preparing to make a bid for Romeo Lavia, the Southampton midfielder, as Jordan Henderson moves closer to a transfer to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq. Belgian reporter Sacha Tavolieri revealed that personal terms are not an issue between Lavia and Liverpool. As the player is personally eager for the move.

Despite initially appearing set to enter the pre-season without major departures and with the acquisitions of Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister. Liverpool now faces the possibility of a shortage in midfield. According to Fabrizio Romano, Jordan Henderson has accepted Al-Ettifaq’s proposal and agreed to their lucrative contract offer. Now, it is up to Liverpool and the Saudi Arabian club to reach an agreement regarding the potential fee.

In the midst of these developments, David Ornstein reports that Al-Ittihad is prepared to make a £40m bid for Fabinho. The deal is going to progress rapidly. With at least one new midfield departure likely this summer, Jurgen Klopp has turned his attention towards Southampton’s Lavia.

Previously valued at £50m by the Saints, Lavia’s future at Southampton is uncertain, especially if Liverpool submits a proposal. Tavolieri reports that Liverpool’s opening bid is imminent, stating,

“Been told #LiverpoolFC waiting for Jordan Henderson’s final word about #AlEttifaqFC before sending the first bid for Romeo #Lavia. The Belgian player talked to Jürgen Klopp and wants to play for the Reds. The Reds truly believe he is definitely a big prospect for the future and was waiting to make space in the midfield to make a step forward. Personal terms are not a problem anymore.”

The Promise of Lavia for Liverpool

Although Lavia cannot replace Jordan Henderson’s leadership qualities and experience at Liverpool, at the age of 19. He is undeniably one of the most talented young players in English football. Jacob Tanswell from The Athletic praised Lavia, saying,

“Imagine receiving facing your own goal with four Chelsea players blocking off your nearest five passing options. Romeo Lavia having the courage and awareness to perform a no-touch turn (which was the only right decision) is frankly ridiculous.”

The potential addition of Lavia to Liverpool’s midfield is not about immediately replacing their captain but rather considering the future. Last season, Klopp’s midfield lacked youthful exuberance at times, leading to the team’s worst season under the German manager.

With Fabinho at 29, Henderson at 33, and Thiago Alcantara at 32, Liverpool’s midfield options felt stagnant. However, with the arrival of Lavia, Szoboszlai, and Mac Allister, the Reds could experience a dramatic and exciting rebuild. The trio would bring a balance of creative flair, hard work, and defensive stability, addressing the shortcomings of the previous season.

From a statistical standpoint, Lavia would be a significant upgrade over the outgoing Henderson. According to FBref, Lavia recorded more tackles, blocks, and interceptions than the midfielder he could potentially replace at Anfield this summer.

While it remains to be seen if Liverpool will secure Lavia’s signature, acquiring the midfielder would be a positive step in their midfield reconstruction, considering the potential he brings to the team.
