Here we have the Manchester United player ratings in a poor display against Newcastle. Man United will hold out on the 7th position on the Premier League table. The Red Devils played out a lackluster 1-1 draw at St. James Park. The Magpies have now got one more point than Norwich City in the relegation zone after a brilliant display against Manchester United.
However, Norwich has one game in hand and can go above Newcastle United if they win.
Newcastle took the lead in the 7th minute when Varane lost possession in his own half. Longstaff steals the ball and plays it for Saint-Maximin who makes a run in the box and finishes in the far corner away from De Gea.
Newcastle could have doubled their lead in the 48th minute if only Saint-Maximin had more power on his shot which came from a great cross from Krafth. De Gea acted quickly to make a one-handed save and the ball was cleared later.
Cavani came to United’s rescue in the 71st minute after his first effort was blocked but scored his second attempt to equalize the score. United had very few big chances to score and win the game. They have now lost some important points for the 4th spot which has great competition.
This poor performance from United may be excused by some because of the COVID outbreak the club faced. The after-effects of the virus could have affected the players’ performances and a motivated Newcastle took advantage of it.
Manchester United Player Ratings vs Newcastle United
David de Gea – 8/10
He was once again the savior for United and could have conceded 3 or 4 goals if it was not for De Gea.
Diogo Dalot – 6/10
He needed help when defending against Saint-Maximin. However, he put a good cross for Cavani to equalize. Still needs more game time to adjust.
Raphael Varane – 5/10
His mistake cost United the first goal. Moreover, he made a few mispasses which led to the Newcastle attacks.
Harry Maguire – 5/10
He obviously lacks the pace but if United plays a high line then he has to do something about the pace. Moreover, he was also not perfect and looked shaky at times.
Alex Telles – 5/10
Struggled in the first to move forward and also while defending. Lost possession in a dangerous position in the second half and also failed to influence the attack.
Scott McTominay – 6/10
He was not able to get control in the midfield against Shelvey and Longstaff. However, he looked better in the second half when he played as the holding midfielder.
Fred – 4/10
He pressed well but lacks the distribution of the ball. Should improve his passing and chance creation.
Bruno Fernandes – 6/10
He was constantly trying everything he could and run up and down to defend. Played in a good ball to Dalot for the goal. However, he still made a few wasteful passes and lost possession there.
Mason Greenwood – 6/10
Came off at halftime for Jadon Sancho. United needed more chance creators than finishers in the second half. However, Mason was also not as good as he can be at times and got subbed off.
Marcus Rashford – 5/10
Caused very little trouble in the first half. However, tried to get past the defense in the second but lacks the final pass and has created very few chances in the last few games.
Cristiano Ronaldo – 6/10
Was visibly very frustrated in the game as he did not get any service in the box and had to help by coming deep. Got a yellow card after a frustrating swing of his foot to clear the ball.
Substitutes
Jadon Sancho – 7/10
He looked lively and should have started the game to create more chances. He created one good chance for Cavani.
Edinson Cavani – 8/10
His positional awareness in the box got him the best chances of United and also a goal for it to show. Once again recused United from the jaws of defeat.
Nemanja Matic – 6/10
Did not have much to influence the game.
